EastEnders: E20 is set to go live on the web in January as part of the run-up to the series' 25th anniversary the following month.

Thirteen new writers, aged between 17 and 22, from London created the online drama at a special summer workshop hosted by the BBC as part of its campaign to nurture young talent.

The programme will follow four new teenage characters who arrive in Albert Square looking for an escape from their lives, and fans will have access to bonuses like video blogs and behind-the-scenes footage.

A spokesperson for the BBC says, "EastEnders: E20 is an opportunity to develop the BBC's expertise in drama production by matching new young talent from the TV industry with the best creative new media talent.

"Together they can exploit the creative potential of the web to create new online drama experiences under the umbrella of the EastEnders brand."

Network bosses say that fans who watch the online series will spot "crossover" treats on the BBC One show.
