Cameron rejects 'il presidente Blair

Speaking during a press conference in London, David Cameron said his party did not support Tony Blair for the position of European Union president. Skip related content

"We dont want the Lisbon treaty so we dont support Europe having this new figure," the Conservative leader said.

"Everyone in Europe knows what we think about the role of president and Tony Blair's candidature for president."

But Cameron refused to be drawn by journalists on whether he agreed with William Hague's comments that the former prime ministers appointment would be seen as a "hostile act" on the part of Europe towards Britain.

"I have the novel approach of having a shadow foreign secretary that I trust and work with hand in glove.

"William has made the position very clear with my full support," he added.

Cameron said if a European president were to be appointed he favoured a more low profile figure who would take the role of chairing the European Council.

He did not want an "All singing, all dancing, all acting" president which he feared Blair would be.

"I dont think that Europe having a president is the right step forward.

"If that absolutely has to happen I would rather it was someone who wanted to chair the council of ministers than build a presidential role."

He added: "Thats a direction 'il presidente Blair would take it.

Asked what Blair should do instead of the European role, Cameron said his concerns about what the ex-prime minister did with his "quite well funded retirement" was far down the list.

"He seems to find plenty of things to do at the moment," he said.

"I thought he was solving the Middle East? He could carry on with that for a bit."
