Sony has announced the recall of certain power adapters for its Vaio range of laptops, after receiving four reports of customers receiving electric shocks. Skip related content
No US users were involved, but the company has organised the recall in association with the US Consumer Product Safety Commission.
"Sony has initiated a voluntary recall for certain AC power adapters which may short circuit and pose a potential electrical shock hazard," said the company in a statement.
The VGP-AC19V17 adapters were issued from 2005 with VGP-PRBX1 and VGP-PRFE1 docking adapters as well as with the VGC-LT, VGC-JS240, VGC-JS250, VGC-JS270, and VGC-JS290 laptops sold after 2007.
The problem appears to be with faulty insulation within the adapters that allows current to escape from the power supplies.
The company has set up a Sony AC Power Adapter Replacement Program web site for customers to check whether their hardware is affected. If it is, the company advises unplugging the power supply and applying for a replacement immediately.
