"Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" took 7.6 million pounds on its debut, according to Screen International on Tuesday, not far short of this year's opening record of 8.3 million set last month by the Transformers blockbuster.

The third of the Ice Age series, released in 3-D, centres around a lost world of dinosaurs under the ice and features the voices of Ray Romano, Queen Latifah and John Leguizamo.

Another newcomer "Public Enemies" opened in second spot with Johnny Depp as the 1930s gangster John Dillinger.

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" was down at three while booze-soaked lads' comedy "The Hangover," fell two places to four.

Cameron Diaz and Alec Baldwin slipped a place to five with tangled tear-jerker, "My Sister's Keeper," just above Stone Age caper "Year One" with Jack Black and Michael Cera which fell three places to six.

Bollywood comedy romance "Kambakkht Ishq" was new at seven while Ben Stiller in "Night at the Museum 2" fell to eight from five.

"Terminator Salvation," the fourth film in the franchise and the first not to star Arnold Schwarzenegger, slipped three places to ninth. The story of two women searching for a new start in life in "Sunshine Cleaning" was unchanged at 10.
