The special effects extravaganza by Roland Emmerich, director of "Independence Day" and "The Day after Tomorrow," took 6.48 million pounds.

That just tops the previous Autumn UK front-runner "Up" which took 6.41 million pounds on its debut but falls well short of the record opening 19.8 million set back in July by "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."

Last week's chart-topper, Walt Disney's high-tech adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," was down in second place after managing the rare feat of earning more in its second weekend than its first.

"Harry Brown" was new at three with Michael Caine as a retired soldier out for justice after the murder of his best friend.

"Up" slipped a place to four, just above "The Men Who Stare at Goats," a military farce with George Clooney and Jeff Bridges, which was also down one, at five.

The stop-motion animated version of Roald Dahl's "Fantastic Mr Fox" stayed at six while Michael Jackson's "This Is It," was the week's biggest faller, down five places to seven.

Alien abduction thriller "The Fourth Kind" was down at eight from five while 1960s coming-of-age tale "An Education" managed to hang on to ninth spot.

High-school comedy horror newcomer "Jennifer's Body," which came in last week at seven, slipped to 10th
