Warm weather on the way out

The autumn heatwave that we have been experiencing is nearing an end, according to forecasters. Skip related content

The warmest areas have felt temperatures of 20 degrees celsius (68F). That has led to it being one of the hottest ends to October on record. But there is a warning that will change after Saturday.

The Met Office is predicting rain and strong winds coming in from Scotland and spreading from the west across England, leading to a dreary start to next week.

Although some areas of the country are set to experience light rain, the temperatures should remain mild.

It comes as a report warns that Britain risks grinding to a halt if it suffers another severe winter.

Bus and train companies needed to be better prepared to deal with extreme cold conditions, the report from the Local Government Association (LGA) added.

The report also said that too few businesses had contingency plans in place so that employees knew what to do when bad weather struck.
