The officers were trying to intervene in battles between two neighbouring villages.
An unknown number of civilians also died in the violence which erupted in Dongo in Equateur province early on Thursday, according to Radio Okapi.
People from neighbouring villages representing two different ethnic groups have been involved in fighting in recent months.
