The former couple got into a row before The Grammy Awards in February, which left the Umbrella star bloodied and bruised.
Rihanna broke her silence in an interview with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America in the US. The 21-year-old said: "This happened to me.... It can happen to anyone."
The chart topper also revealed how close she and her ex-boyfriend were.
She added: "He was definitely my first big love."
R&B star Chris was sentenced to five years probation, six months of community service and a year of domestic violence counselling after pleading guilty to the assault.
He broadcast an apology on YouTube and spoke about the attack with Larry King on CNN.
Rihanna's interview will be broadcast on Thursday and Friday in the States.
