He is from the 3rd Battalion The Rifles and died as a result of an explosion near Sangin, in central Helmand Province, early on Thursday.
Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said: "It is with deep sorrow I must inform you that a British soldier, one of our own, was killed this morning.
"A fellow soldier taken from us in this conflict; his sacrifice will not be forgotten."
It brings the number of UK troops killed since operations began to 230.
