IGNOU provides open and distance learning, leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees. It has more than two million students enrolled in India and 34 other countries.

Gowton Achaibar, president at Ericsson India, said: "This partnership is yet another proof point of telecommunication being key for development of society. Education using mobile broadband technology will provide an efficient and economical way to get content to students in distance learning programs. We have a clear opportunity to use India's rapidly rising teledensity to bring the advantages of broadband to the world of education."

Ericsson recently won a three-year managed services contract from United Arab Emirates-based operator du. In July, it won a managed services contract from Telefonica O2 UK to provide field maintenance and other services for 2G and 3G networks and a seven-year wireless and wireline network services contract valued at between $4.5bn and $5bn from telecoms services provider Sprint Nextel.
