'Medvedev girl' backs Russia's new president

MOSCOW (AFP) - His predecessor Vladimir Putin had pop songstresses swooning and even made it into women's magazines when he bared his torso. Now Russia's new President Dmitry Medvedev has some catching up to do.

A spoof video based on the US clip "Obama girl" is maybe not what he had in mind, however. The video was featured in the popular Komsomolskaya Pravda daily on Thursday and is the latest Internet joke on Medvedev to clutter inboxes.

The video uses the raunchy Internet clip showing a girl in love with US presidential hopeful Barack Obama, except the dubbed lyrics are now about Russia's complex political system rather than the US primaries.

"You work well together with Putin. You're my only candidate.... I dream of you at night," goes the new Medvedev song, which has been posted on YouTube. "I have to be with you -- you're so sexy and cool."

Medvedev was inaugurated on Wednesday as Russia's third president since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991 at a glittering Kremlin ceremony dominated by Putin, who is now prime minister.

During his lacklustre campaign, Medvedev said he was an avid Internet user and became the subject of a string of jokes, playing on his perceived domination by Putin and his name, derived from the Russian word for bear.

In 2002, the previously unknown Russian pop group Singing Together -- a blonde and a brunette -- put out a popular single called "A Man Like Putin" in which they crooned: "I want a man like Putin, full of strength."
