Ryan Harris, 19, was hoisted to safety by a Coast Guard helicopter from his 4ft-by-4ft "lifeboat" on Saturday after spending the night clinging on to the bin.

Mr Harris, from Sitka in the southeast of the country, told the Daily Sitka Sentinel he gave himself pep talks and sang Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Row, Row, Row Your Boat to keep his spirits up during his ordeal.

A fellow crewmember, Stonie "Mac" Huffman, managed to get into a survival suit and managed to make it ashore after also spending the night drifting while gripping an empty fish bin.

The pair were washed apart by 8ft waves.

Mr Harris told the newspaper: "I never thought I was going to die, but I was worried about Mac. I'm glad to be here.

"I gave myself a pep talk: I'm Ryan Hunter Harris and I'm not going to die here."

Don Kluting, of Sitka Mountain Rescue, said: "It's truly a miracle they survived."

At one stage Mr Harris was thrown out of the bin and hit his head against it, but he was able to get back in before he was rescued.
