Amazon adds Viacom to its streaming armoury

Amazon's global assault continues with the news that the e-retail giant has signed a deal with Viacom - meaning a wealth of new content is now available for the Seattle-based company to stream.

Stream in the US, that is - remember, we don't get any Amazon streaming action in the UK as of yet although hopefully deals like this and its ownership of Lovefilm may change that soon.

The Viacom deal means that Amazon Prime streamers, and owners of Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, will be able to access content from channels including MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, VH1 and Spike. In total there are now more than 15,000 Prime Instant Videos with the Viacom partnership bringing in shows such as The Hills, Jersey Shore, The Sarah Silverman Program, Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants.

"Over the last year we have received fantastic customer feedback about Prime Instant Video," said Brad Beale, director of video content acquisition for Amazon. "We are constantly working to improve the service by adding the shows that our customers enjoy the most.

It certainly has us nailed: we're a sucker for a bit of SpongeBob action.

Oh well nothing like a good book, DVD, CD, or decent TV production, perhaps they would like to deal with the BBC?
