'Axe-Wielding' Robbery Suspect Tackled By Public

A suspected armed robber has been arrested in central London after he was knocked off a moped and wrestled to the ground by a member of the public.

Police said four people - two on a moped and two on a motorcycle - tried to steal items from the H Stain jewellers in Victoria Street at around 1pm on Tuesday.

The men were armed with axes and hammers at the time of the attempted robbery.

One of the suspects tried to escape on a moped, but was forced to the ground by an onlooker.

Photographs of the incident posted on Twitter show the suspect pinned to the ground by two men.

An axe can also be seen lying on the road.

The detained 18-year-old suspect has been taken to a police station in London.

One other suspect fled on foot into Lower Grosvenor Place, where he hailed a taxi outside the Robin Hotel.

The two other suspects fled the scene on the motorcycle. The bike was later found at Eaton Square, and police say the men are also believed to have hailed a taxi.

Police say it is not known what items, if any, were stolen by the robbers.

An investigation is under way, and police are particularly keen to hear from taxi drivers who may have picked up the alleged robbers.
