Balmy weather on the way as temperatures set to soar to 17C

    Shirt-sleeve weather by Thursday

Brits will get an early glimpse of spring as an unusually mild spell of weather is expected by the end of the week – with top temperatures of 17°C (63F).

The balmy weather comes just a week after the mercury plunged to a chilly low of -15.6°C in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, during the first half of the month.

Could it be time to put the winter clothes away already? The Met Office says temperatures could reach 17°C

The exceptionally mild temperatures are well over the national average for this time of year – where southern England can expect maximum temperatures of 9°C and residents of Scotland expect maximums of 7°C.

Met Office forecaster Sarah Holland told Yahoo! News on Monday: “The massive change in weather is due to a south-westerly flow bringing milder air.”

But before the much-anticipated shirt-sleeve weather sets in on Thursday, the first half of the week will remain wet and windy.

The warmest places will be in the south, however, forecasters predict that the east of Scotland and the West Midlands could see temperatures up to 16°C due as early as Wednesday.
It was only a few weeks ago when planes needed to be de-iced and cleared of snow at Heathrow Airport

While the weather will stay unseasonably warm until early next week, forecasters warned that it would not necessarily be wall-to-wall sunshine.

Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said with the weather coming in from the Atlantic, we would usually expect to see a fair amount of cloud too.

Never trust a weather Forecast especially here in Scotland..we have our own unique weather....Rain,followed by snow, then more rain, followed by gales with rain (horizontal),rain........rain..and a high of 5 degrees.

Not in all parts of Scotland, John Ward. In Fife, just north of the Forth, relatives tell me it's been consistently warmer than here in Essex with no snow for many weeks.

Now that is a load of tosh Ray. There was a flurry of snow in Fife on saturday........

Every time there is a spell of hot weather we have a hose pipe ban and now we are in drought conditions. How is it that the hot Greek islands have plenty of water all summer long to provide water for all the thousands of hotels and visitors and the staff hose down all around the swimming pool area every morning?
Maybe we should learn lessons on how to store water properly, we certainly have enough rain when it does start!
      • greyjaybee 3 months ago
Presumably the water companies cant afford to repair all those leaks because most of their profit goes to their shareholders and to pay the bosses thir juicy salries. Dont forget though, we are a very overcrowded island.
BTW Kane, learn some manners, little boy.
      • jason m 3 months ago
Most of the (fresh)water to the smaller Islands is transported there by boat.

Because in Europe they recycle rainwater and use it for toilets, showers, etc, whereas we use treated drinking water for everything.

this will be the warmest late February since records began. People will be cramming themselves into walk in fridges to escape from the intense heat. A spokesman from the Met Office said 'this is unprecedented' but apparently he is a robot who only has stock phrases such as that. He can't predict the weather though.

They have a saying on the Clyde: "If you can see to the other side it is going to rain. If you can't then it IS raining." Works every time, or so I'm told. (They say much the same in Portsmouth about the Isle of Wight too.)

Reminds me of the classic Evening Standard headline, 'Britain sizzles in the seventies'.

Which, when you think about it, was an odd thing to say -- most of the fun had already gone out of Britain by the end of the 60s.
