No room at the inn for injured soldier

Thu Sep 04 02:38PM
A British soldier on leave after being injured in Afghanistan has been refused a room in a Surrey hotel just because he is in the army.

The BBC has reported that Corporal Tomos Stringer, 23, from Gwynedd in Wales, was visiting an injured friend near Woking when he was turned away from the Metro Hotel.

Corporal Stringer, of 13 Air Assault Support Regiment, was asked to provide a form of identification to book the room and when he presented his military pass he was told that it was management policy not to accept Armed Forces as guests.

Stringer, who injured his wrist falling out of a truck while coming under fire in Afghanistan, was forced to spend the night in his car.

He has now returned to Afghanistan but his mother, Gaynor Stringer, was so upset over the way he was treated by the hotel she wrote to MP Hywel Williams.

Mrs Stringer has also voiced her disappointment over how soldiers are treated in Britain compared to in the United States.

"We've been to America and their military get treated like heroes over there. I think it's terrible they [UK Armed Forces] can't even wear their uniform with pride."

Police were called to the hotel Thursday after the hotel's management claimed it had been receiving threatening and abusive phone calls.

A spokesman for Surrey police said: "Officers were called to the scene because of claims of abusive, offensive and threatening phone calls towards the Metro Hotel. We will monitor the calls to see if an offence has occured, if it has then we can trace the calls and further action will be taken."

The Metro Hotel, which is owned by American Amusements Ltd, has issued an apologetic statement saying the incident "was a mistake".

Armed Forces Minister Bob Ainsworth has written to the Metro Hotel management demanding a more detailed explanation.

  2. What a cheek. Close the hotel down or at least give the staff training on how to be respectful to our service personnel.

  3. While i totaly agree that his treatment was disgusting, id just like to make a
few points; first, soldiers have allways been treated badly, two particular
examples being the sailors of the English fleet after the defeat of the armada,
and the soldiers of the french foreign legion. The sailors were pretty much
abandoned after the defeat of the spanish, despite what they had done for their
country. The soldiers of the foriegn legion were treated with a distinct air of
ambivalance by the french people for a long time, for a long time they werent
even allowed into the country they died for. It doesent mean that we shouldnt do
better by the members of the armed services today, but it does mean that we
shouldnt be so shocked, or get so indignant about; if we realy cared so much, they
would be paid a damn site better, the time limits on deplyments, and gaps
between deployments would be more strictly enforced, and we would care about them
all the time, not just when it is shoved in our faces! Another point, i live near
a town with a large garrison, and the soldiers can get somewhat rowdy in town,
causing huge ammounts of trouble; i guess what im trying to say is lets nor treat
the millitary like the angels they are not, they are trained killers, and while they
deserve our respect, and good treatment, we shoulnt put them up on a pedestal, or
will end up like the americans, and i for one do not want to see that.

  4. WTF - The government skanks us all silly, sends out soldiers to fight someone elses battle, brings terror to our country, raises taxes, does nothing to help the truly needy, allows innocents to live in fear of criminals and you guys think we should 'sort the country' out just because a hotel turns down someone they rightfully assume to be high risk?! People come on, these poor sods are submitted to all sorts that makes them crazy. I bet there'd be complaints of a different nature if that man had stayed there and shot people up only to be found he was suffering from depression! Anyways, if he went all that way to see a friend shouldn't his mate have put him up? Some friend!

  6. I understand the appropach of the hotel chain towards forces personnel and don't
beleive that this was directed against one idividual(Corporal Stringer). HM Forces
personnel have areputation for drunkeness and bad behavoir whilst under the
influence, particularly the army guys. To save future hassle and costs of repair
etc the best approach is not to permit access. I too would have a blanket ban of
identified groups of with a history of trouble causing if it was my hotel.
Corporal Stringer can thank the groups of inconsiderate drunken and bad behaving
    squaddies for this situation.

  7. So why don't we tell the hotel that this behaviour is a disgrace and all write into the hotel to complain. Moaning about it on here is one thing telling the hotel outright is more likely to bring some kind of action. What is the cost of a stamp compared to a man willing to fight for his country?

  8. Absolutely disgusting! This young man should have been given a room for free, not turned away like some criminal. What an absolutely disgusting policy - I've never heard the like. Who came up with such an idiotic idea!

  9. Maybe we should ship the hotel chain to Afghanistan and deny them a place to stay.
    They should all be deported.

  10. "I would like to see them prosecuted for insulting the Queen by refusing to accomodate one of her soldiers" One of her soldiers?! Were you born stupid or did you take special lessons? The army serves the country, not the monarch!
