Last week Tony Blair urged Pope Benedict XVI to change his views on gay marriage, arguing that the religious leader has an "entrenched attitude" that is in need of a rethink.
The Pope is firmly opposed to any relaxation of the Church's traditional stance on homosexuality, contraception or any other area of human sexuality and he describes homosexuality as a "tendency" towards an "intrinsic moral evil".
In an interview with Attitude magazine the former prime minister said: "We need an attitude of mind where rethinking and the concept of evolving attitudes becomes part of the discipline with which you approach your religious faith."
Historically religion has dictated onto society how people should be living their lives but now the opposite has started happening - society is demanding the church changes to keep up with their modern lifestyles.
Once upon a time when religion and politics were entwined by the monarchy people were punished for not following religion to the letter. As monarchs' powers gradually dwindled so too did the power that religion held over this, and many other countries, around the world.
But does this loss of power mean that religion should now adapt to suit us and our notions of what is right and wrong? Certainly the Pope does not think so.
The whole premise behind religion is that each faith knows it is right. Religion is the most irrationally stubborn belief known to man and so a change of stance will often look like an admittance of being wrong.
Some aspects of religion have been left behind, but often these changes have been imposed on them by serious changes in law. Very infrequently have religions changed to follow society's wishes.
And why is that? If the Pope were to take advice from Tony Blair and change his stance on gay marriage he would effectively be saying Catholicism was not 100% right. And if it was wrong about gay marriage what else could it be wrong about?

I support the pope and urge him to hold firm to his stand. The bible teaches us that God gave us sex as one of the ways to fill the earth with people. Any behaviour contra to this injunction is unacceptable. Needless to state that down playing of the virtues taught us by the bible has led to a world with various negative behaviours. If the world leaders, ( political and economic) conduct their business with the fear and respect for the word of God, the World will be a better place. Austin

"When you die, if you've been good, you go to heaven."
So what happens on Judgement day to the marginal cases?
"Hope you enjoyed your time in heaven but we made a mistake so it's into the pit of hell for all the rest of eternity."?
"Sorry about that - here, I'll help you to beat out the flames - careful now, you don't want to singe your wings now you've got them...."?
But if Big G is infallible then everyone goes to the right place to start with so.... Why Judgement Day????

Does Tony Blair realise there is a difference between a religious marriage and a civil partnership? I don't think that loving another person is wrong, but the supposed purposes behind a marriage tend to do with being "joined" and having a family as a consequence.... something that a gay partnership can't do naturally, they'd have to adopt or something. But people who are married have certain legal priviledges, which is unfair to a partnership which can't get married, so they allowed the civil marriage for homosexuals so they could have this and be recognised as joined... Isn't this enough? Do people really understand what a religious marriage is? I think if they did, this debate wouldn't be happening. Homosexual and heterosexual couples in this society can go and be recognised and bound together as such the way things already are, and that's what matters. If you want to be recognised as joined in front of your God, you don't need the church to do that, your relationship with God a personal thing, and if you want witnesses, well, what's to stop you asking someone? Church marriages are perhaps more complicated than till death do us part. Especially in Catholiscism.

The pope wears a dress and lots of jewellery, if he's not careful people might get the wrong idea. Why are people so keen to believe that everything in the bible is true? At the time it was written they thought nailing people to a cross was a good idea.......times change and views change as we become more educated. I find the pope's views "intrinsic moral evil" as they will surely be used as justification for homophobic attacks, both physical and verbal that continue around the world.

I would like to say whatever it says in a Religious text whatever Religion you are you have to follow it. We are Man/Women and we are not God and if it was written by God then we have no right to change Gods rulings!

Whilst the bible can provide some excellent lessons (obvious things like love and respect, don't kill or steal, etc.), why do we all have to be 'micro-managed'? If two people are in a loving, faithful, respectful, committed relationship, how can that be a 'moral evil' or hurtful? If you believe god has created man, then He is responsible for man's free will and ability to change and evolve.

Tony Blair has only been a Catholic for 5 mins and already he is trying to change Church laws that have been in existence for many years. Look what a mess he made when he was Prime Minister. Leave the Church alone Blair...We are doing ok...Not all of us want the homosexual problem pushed down our throats. I am a Catholic and abide by what the Chirch and the Pope says....

I think Tony Blair is desperately trying to stay in the public eye and qualify the ludicrous amount of money that he gets for poking his nose into what he knows little about. As far as changing religion is concerned I would just take all the churches riches (regardless of which religion) and pass out a few punds to those that need it. I know th at some investments help pay the priests and vicars but gold and silver trinkets and images and crosses etc., should be melted down.

Some could say that they dont choose to be gay and if this statement is true it must come from somewhere and as all things are supposed to come from god then it only stands to reason that it come from god. I do think the pope should change the way of thinking in todays society there is nothing wrong with people being gay and most people have tried it. Now i admit that having Tony Blair urge this to the pope was probably not the best of moves his moral compass is so screwed up he thinks the sun rises in the north.
