Can Cameron give us our hope back?

Mon Jun 15 12:56PM
I like Gordon Brown. That's not a ‘cool' thing to say in the media at the moment, the bandwagon of anti-Brown writers is growing by the day.

Despite the mess the government is in I still think Brown is an intelligent, trustworthy and decisive man, a good leader to have in a crisis. But do I think he should be our Prime Minister? No, for one simple reason - he can't communicate with us.

Every time I see poor old Gordon talk I want to end it all. He's either creepily happy to the point of nausea or he's morbidly depressing, there's little in-between.

We look across the pond and see Barack Obama charming audiences with his fresh, well-delivered speeches then we look back at our TV sets and see Brown either struggling to save his political life with an (understandably) mopey face or see him on the GMTV sofa saying how much he likes Susan Boyle, with a hideously forged smile. Doesn't seem fair does it?  Where's our charismatic leader? Where's our hope?

So what's the alternative? Realistically the only alternative at the moment is David Cameron. I don't like Cameron, I think he's smarmy and I don't think he really has many strong ideas of his own. He jumped on the back of both Nick Clegg's big wins lately - a call for the Speaker to quit and the "justice for Ghurkas" campaign. But say what you like about Cameron, he talks a good talk and in modern politics if you can do that you're half way there. He speaks with confidence, passion and energy and that's exactly what we need to hear at the moment.

We need change, we need light at the end of the tunnel; we need hope. Will all that come if/when Cameron is elected? I doubt it, but we probably won't be feeling so morbid every time we see the news and that's a start at least.

  3. I don't know who is best to do the job from the lot on offer but it is definitely not Cameron. When he becomes PM next year, it will be too late for us to realise that we've jumped from the frying pan into the microwave oven just because we've elected someone who can talk the talk but can't do the job.

  4. ' Its the economy stupid ' This election is not in the bag for Cameron yet. The British people at the end of the day will vote for the party that gives them economic stability, whether that be labour, under a stuffed shirt like Brown, or Conservative, led by the personable Cameron. Lets hope it does not turn into a beauty competition as you seem to be suggesting.

  5. I would rather have Gordon Brown than Cameron any day, I agree with the bloke who wrote the article he is sooooo smarmy he makes me want to puke! After enduring Margaret Thatchers reign, the thought of a tory government frightens me to death.

  6. I don't agree that Cameron talks a good talk.
I recently wrote to him to point out just how badly he comes across in parliament, particularly in PMQ's. He is a bully. He took advantage of Gordon Browns dilemma and put the boot in very savagely. You might say that, that is what you should do when the opportunity arises when you are leader of the opposition, but he definitely lost my approval as a result.

  7. Cameron is a hollow lightweight and, if elected, his carping and his facade will not buy the baby any new shoes. The British public should not confuse charisma with effectiveness. In these internationally troubled times the Brown administration has delivered the best positioned economy in Europe. Look at the facts and don't get sidetracked or suckered by the media hatemail

  8. Cameron is a smarmy little climber, who slips ferret-like out of situations that the wooden brown simply crashes into.

The Lib Dems are the only major party not to have shown themselves irredeemably corrupt in my opinion

  9. Brown trustworthy?? I can't remember the last truthful thing he has said. he claims
we are in the best financial position of most EU countries when in fact all the
professionals say we are in one of the worst positions. And for him to say that
Labour won't do any cuts in public spending is just a bare faced lie when we all
know he will not only do cuts but also raise taxes.

The problem with this government is they always say one thing then do the next.
They say they won't do anything against the public and then behind the publics gaze
they screw us not just once but as many times as they can. At least with the tories
when your getting screwed they don't lie to your face about it
