Michael Jackson's memorial service

Tue Jul 07 04:01PM

Michael Jackson's star-studded memorial service ended on a fittingly emotional note after fans, friends and stars paid tribute to the 'King of Pop'.

The service began when his coffin was carried into the Staples Center in Los Angeles by his brothers before tributes were paid by Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela.

Mariah Carey then sang 'I'll Be There' before Queen Latifah read a Maya Angelou poem and Llionel Richie took to the stage. As expected Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Usher and John Mayer also performed.

One of the most emotional tributes came from close childhood friend Brooke Shields who, while fighting back the tears, reminisced about their good times together.

All of the performers then rejoined the stage to perform a tear-jerking version of 'Heal the World' before his family, including his daughter, addressed the crowd as the world said goodbye to Michael Jackson.

It is estimated that an astounding 750 million people watched the service live around the world.

  1. I wonder if the world will act this way when Gary Glitter dies. We're celebrating a black man who wanted desperately to be white, a recording artist who hasn't made anything worthwhile in almost a decade and a businessman who burned everyone who ever entered into a deal with him, including his own family. We are deifying a raging drug addict and comparing him with actual musical geniuses like Buddy and Hendrix. With all the people in the world who actually deserve such adulation, we ought truly to be ashamed.

  4. angeladawnnew123 - I think you'll find that he went to trial in 2005 and was acquitted on all TEN charges laid before him. In 1993 SONY MUSIC (Jackson's record label) advised and aided pay off as Jackson was no.1 in the world, mid-tour and a trial would damage all of that. Yet again, an example of poor advice to MJ. He was a misunderstood genius, who brought joy to millions and millions of people. Rest in peace now MJ, knowing the world you left behind loves you. Gone too soon, but no-one can hurt you now
