BBC suspend Brand and Ross: Storm in a teacup?

Wed Oct 29 11:38AM

Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand have both been suspended by the BBC over the recent prank calls incident involving actor Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter Georgina Baillie.

BBC Director-General Mark Thompson said it is "not appropriate for either Russell Brand or Jonathan Ross to continue broadcasting on the BBC until I have seen the full report of the actions of all concerned".

Today the number of complaints sent to the BBC calling for the presenters to be sacked reached 18,000.

Not only that but Gordon Brown weighed in with his condemnation of the incident and Ms Baillie stated that she is now contemplating legal action.

Andrew Sachs has arguably been the only person in the whole affair to act with some dignity: "Jonathan Ross has personally delivered a letter of apology and some flowers. He made no excuses and was very frank and open. He's in a lot of trouble and I don't want to pile any more on him."

Following the phone calls from Brand and Ross to Sachs during their adult radio show on Saturday 18th October, just two complaints were made by angry listeners - the press got hold of it a week later and now we're into the tens-of-thousands. As a result, the BBC has now been forced to take this drastic step.

This shows us two things - the press is a powerful tool and, more notably, it's been a slow news week. After all there are only so many stories about elections and financial meltdowns that can be published before readers get bored. Presumably it was out of boredom that the Prime Minister decided to get involved too. Back to the economy now though please Mr Brown.

My question to you is: Do you think Ross and Brand deserve to be sacked?

  5. I believe that the BBC as a publicly funded organisation must show a balanced view in dealing with this type of obsurd behaviour. I hope that the eventual outcome will be dismissal for both of these idiots

  8. Personally I think they should not be sacked necessarily but they should be made to
publically apologise to all concerned parties individually.

Phone calls of this nature should not be condoned and these two celebs are paid
vast amounts of money, so they should know better.
