Microsoft officials
have confirmed that the company is to introduce a way for users to surf the Web
anonymously.
As part of the upcoming Internet Explorer 8 release, Microsoft is incorporating 'inPrivate' - a mode that will not record visits to the user's history and will not allow sites to place cookies on the user's system. Apple currently offers a similar service with its Safari browser.
Many industry pundits haven't wasted any time in pointing out one of the most obvious uses of the feature, nicknaming it 'porn mode,' highlighting the ability to view adult sites without leaving a trail for employers or family members to follow.
There have also been questions raised over the helpfulness of the latest release, which could make it harder for police to track Internet users that are viewing harmful or illegal websites.
On a recent posting to the official IE blog though, Microsoft officials put forward some more innocent uses of the new release:
"Have you ever wanted to take your web browsing 'off the record'? Perhaps you're using someone else's computer and you don't want them to know which sites you visited. Maybe you need to buy a gift for a loved one without ruining the surprise. Maybe you're at an Internet kiosk and don't want the next person using it to know at which website you bank."
Obviously the new Internet Explorer will have pros and cons but my question to you is: Should the Internet be completely private or should our movements be traceable?

So microsoft can do something half decent. But they had to steal the idea. Big brother (the state) will always watch you. They are scared of their own shadow. No cookies is something we should all have be default.

Absolutely disgraceful, all this will achieve is to give paedophiles the freedom to view child porn, but then why would Microsoft care as long as they are making money!

society creates a lack of freedom for the mayority. We lost most of our freedoms years ago, so why should the Internet be any different. The powers to be will still track you. I bet you if I put this new IE on "porn mode" and type in "kill bush" and start typing in "bomb making" in my search engine I will be visiting guantanamo bay rather fast

Privacy is of the utmost importance for everyone. The Police and Government use the excuse that if you are innocent you have nothing to fear. Yet every Police report in the UK this year has criticised the Police for arresting innocent people over very minor offences, for which you then have a criminal record. Every person on this planet breaks some law every day of their lives without even knowing it. More and more people who thought they had nothing to fear are becoming victims of this 'Big Brother' approach. Paedophiles, Terrorists etc are the usual excuse the authorities use for adopting this draconian approach, yet the reality is that this information is used to spy on innocent members of the public and it is they who are being affected. I work for a local government and am well aware of what they do with your information, they sell it onto private organisations for profit. You should be very concerned that Banks, Government etc regularly lose or pass on your person details without your consent. Which means that it is now very easy for criminal organisations to use your personal data!!

Given that the police need a warrant or a court order to seize and examine a persons computer(at least in the Uk), The only people with anything to fear are those with something to hide.
The question is not do we have a right to privacy because we do, the question is Do we get value for money when buying Microsoft Products.
After all these new and improved versions are using "Code" thats been around for many years why have we not had all these benefits long before now.

why is it when people claim the right to privacy everybody thinks theyre criminals, because we want to browse without being traced might mean youre looking for a present for your @#$%friend and dont want her to discover about it, it might mean you want to do a job seach, its doesnt have to mean they looking for kiddy pron. We have a right to privacy, we have the right to be presumed innocent till proven guilty and should defend it before we end up in a police state

As @6 states you need to look at this from a techinical perspective, the browser will allow you to browse anonymously from the client, it will not record information locally and will not accept cookies locally allowing sites to then track your activity. It will not stop sites and ISPs logging you IP and MAC address details and what sites they go to. Nothing will change here in terms of tracking the sick minded. You may be a bit securer hiding your porn sites etc from the misses but I'm sure that's as far as it goes !

It's too little, too late! But at least it shows that @#$%rs are looking into the problem.
The proper way to protect everyone, while also maintaining privacy, would be for every user to be properly registered and authenticated with their Internet Service Provider; but then the ISP having technology in place to provide users the range of choices between maintaining full anonymity (including IP address etc) or up to proving their identity as needed. That way, spammers could finally be caught, transactions made secure, while no-one other than the proper authorities would be able to tap in.
But that kind of thing would need a global standard and consensus to do...

@ emma refson
What is wrong with you. You live in constant fear???!!! Paedophiles were caught well before there was the internet, not because of it. They can't contain their lifestyle and they will always be caught and police can and do use other methods of surveillance and information gathering to catch these people, so chill out and stop freaking out.
You're a prime example of sheeple, wake up and stop living in fear and start to learn to love life and the people you see and meet.

FAO: emmarefson - I'm still trying to work out if your post was ironic or if you are just a sensationlist puppet that believes and reacts to everything in the media this way - it's people like you that are a danger to society, not just paedophiles. Stop being brainwashed with everything you hear and read from media sources and the Government instead of screaming 'paedophiles', 'maddie', 'war on terror' to justify your (propaganda infested) opinion, try looking into the facts behind things before you respond.
