Britain To Shiver In Blast Of Cold Weather

Bitterly cold Arctic air sweeping across Britain could force temperatures down to lows of -5C this weekend, forecasters say.

The warnings of freezing conditions come after weeks of unseasonably mild weather.

Sky News weather presenter Jo Wheeler said: "After a winter that has yo-yoed between mild conditions and the occasional cold spell, it looks as though a high pressure system over north-eastern Europe is going to feed Arctic air into Britain over the next few days.

"How long this cold snap will last is largely dependent on the drift of that high pressure system.

"If it edges north, then it could bring some sustained wintry weather to central and eastern parts of the country.

"A slide southwards however, would give some cold conditions for a few days, but little in the way of snow.

"Over the coming weekend, milder conditions from the Atlantic will try to spread in across Scotland and Northern Ireland. This rain, meeting up with the cold air in residence, could give some snowfall on Monday."

Forecasters predicted wintry showers and hail to blast parts of the UK on Friday, but there were no large blanketings of snow.

However, meteorologists said the chill factor is starting to creep in.

They have predicted temperatures in Scotland to drop to as low as -5C and in England and Wales they could fall to -1C.

Next week, temperatures in London are expected to peak at between 3C and 5C - two or three degrees colder than the average for this time of year.

Chris Burton, forecaster with Meteogroup, said: "It is cold enough for sleet and snow in the higher ground such as the Pennines and the Lake District.

"It's looking like it will get increasingly cold through the weekend and into next week."

Meanwhile, The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for ice to motorists travelling on untreated roads in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and northern England.

To Sky News. Don't you think that some RECENT weather forecasting is in order, rather than a forecast two weeks old. Come on wake up & smell the coffee!!

Its January and its winter - we need some really cold weather to kill all the bugs and viruses going around. The winters we had when we were kids were far worser. I can remember the ice on the inside of the windows because we had no central heating. I wish all weather forecasters would stop making such a fuss.

This cold spell depends on where the high pressure moves too,It may drift north,or slide south. It's a guessing game.

Great news, might kill some of the scrounging germs that seem to occupy our beautiful country.

How do we living in Cornwall expect it to hit us?
They said about a big freeze in October last year but it never affected Cornwall.
I always thought a big freeze was something that affected the whole of the country.

I recall Christmas time in '81. Down in Eastleigh (Hampshire)it got down to -10. A few weeks later, we went back to Australia, where we were having a nasty heatwave. it got to 44!
