    British Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

A British soldier from The Light Dragoons has been killed after the vehicle he was travelling in struck an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

The soldier's family have been informed.

Spokesman for UK Forces Afghanistan, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Parry, said: "I have the sad duty to inform you that a soldier from The Light Dragoons has died as a result of wounds sustained while on duty in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone serving in Task Force Helmand are extended to his family and friends at this extremely difficult time."

The soldier's death brings the number of members of UK forces to have died since operations in Afghanistan began in October 2001 to 427.

Guardsman Karl Whittle, 22, died in hospital in Birmingham on Friday, having been injured in an attack by insurgents in the same area of Helmand Province on August 14.

Guardsman Whittle, a member of The Queen's Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, was described as "one in a million" by his family.
