    BT planning 300Mb broadband

BT has announced that it has held successful trials of "FTTP on demand" in St Agnes, Cornwall, paving the way for broadband download speeds of up to 300Mbps.

Back in 2009 BT announced that it would use "fibre to the cabinet", or FTTC, tech at 29 exchanges across the UK, promising speeds of up to 40Mbps. FTTP tech takes the fibre-optic revolution a step further though by taking advantage of the fibre it has already deployed between the exchanges and the street cabinets to provide super fast speeds both for downloads and uploads.

BT states that this technological development "has the potential to transform the UK broadband landscape". It plans to conduct further trials in the Summer and plans to release the service commercially by spring next year.

Openreach chief executive Olivia Garfield said: "FTTP on demand is a significant development for Broadband Britain. Essentially, it could make our fastest speeds available wherever we deploy fibre. This will be welcome news for small businesses who may wish to benefit from the competitive advantage that such speeds provide.

BT also announced that it expects to begin doubling broadband speeds from 40Mbps to 80Mbps in the next few months and that two thirds of BT's customers will be able to benefit from these faster speeds by the end of 2014.

A recent Ofcom report stated that the average broadband speeds in the UK had risen by 22 per cent since the end of 2010 but that the speed nationally was measured at just 7.6Mbps. 300Mbps still seems a long way away then.....

Why should it? If you choose to live in such an isolated area then you can't complain that you don't get the same level of service as someone living in the financially viable urban areas.

And whats the point in 400mbps when we have the likes of SOPA/PIPA/ACTA breathing down our necks?

Worry about giving us a STABLE connection rather than stupid speeds which in reality you will never get all day long

The only way the country is going to get connected to a high speed broad band system if the providers have to supply it to 10 customers in rural (difficult) areas for every 100 they connect in urban (easy) areas.

So how much does a 100mb line cost in other countries? 85 a month? expensive im sure. The whole point is that a fast connection at a LOW price

It doesn't what speed you go at if the other person has a lower speed you drop to thier speed. Untile everyone has a fast line it doesn't really matter.

virgin media have already tested 1Gb in London and already do 100Mb. BT are just to far out of touch, and they are an absolute mess especially for business customers.... Hopefully they go bust.

BTs lack of vision got us into this mess in the first place, when the continent were enjoying 100 MB connections we had 1/2 meg connections if you were lucky, Korea have 1gig connections, BT what in the same Heeeeell has taken you so long to even get this far?? it was a no brainer what sort of business opportunity the internet was. tsk tsk happy with Virgin now
