A second body has been found by detectives investigating the murder of an elderly woman who was apparently killed during a burglary.
Merseyside Police arrested a 43-year-old man after the discovery of a woman's body at a house in Lonsdale Road, Southport, on Tuesday evening.
Now they say another woman has been found dead at another property.
A police spokesman said: "As a result of further inquiries, a second body has been recovered at an address in Birch Street, Southport, in the early hours of this morning.
"At this time, the cause of death has yet to be established. Home Office post-mortems will be carried out later today."
The first victim has been named in the Liverpool Echo as Margaret Biddolph. It is understood she had lived in the house in Lonsdale Road for 36 years.
Police said both women were believed to be in their 80s, although formal identification is yet to take place.
House-to-house inquiries are under way and both scenes remain sealed for forensic examination.
On Tuesday, officers said the woman killed in Lonsdale Road might have been the victim of a "burglary gone wrong".
Detective Chief Inspector John Roberts said: "While we are at the early stages of the murder inquiry, we are investigating a possible connection with a burglar.
"We urge anyone who may have seen anyone acting suspiciously in the area in the days and weeks prior to the incident or have any information about burglaries in the area to call us.
"No matter how small that piece of information may seem, it could be vital to our investigation."
Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 .
