Cameron Vows To Protect UK In EU Crisis Plan

Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted British interests will be paramount if the European Union treaty is changed to help resolve the eurozone crisis.

David Cameron says that saving the euro does not necessarily require a treaty change, but EU institutions needs to get behind the currency "with everything they've got".

The Prime Minister was speaking after a working lunch with President Nicolas Sarkozy in Paris to discuss proposals by France and Germany to bring Eurozone countries together in a tighter "fiscal union".

The eurozone's two biggest economies believe the single currency can only be saved if the 17 countries which use the single currency co-ordinate their fiscal policies much more closely.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel signalled in a speech to the Bundestag that she would want national governments in the new union to conform to agreed limits on spending, and any "debt sinner" could be forced to answer for their transgressions at the European Court of Justice.

There is little doubt that Germany's official line is much tougher than that of France, which sees a far greater role for the European Central Bank (ECB) in buying up sovereign debt and the possibility of issuing "elite bonds" to spread the risk across the zone's wealthiest.

However, Sky sources suggest that Germany may be softening its stance behind closed doors and that the proposed treaty change is part of a deal cooked up with the ECB allowing it to legally intervene more aggressively, using the International Monetary Fund (IMF (Berlin: MXG1.BE - news) ) as cover.

So far its role has been limited to buying bonds of vulnerable countries on the secondary markets to keep yields low.

The ECB's governing council will meet on Thursday, as European leaders start arriving in Brussels for the council summit.

The suggestion is that the IMF may be used as a mechanism to siphon, or at least underwrite, extra support to troubled economies, such as Greece and Portugal.

The IMF is funded by countries including the UK and the US, so this would not be without controversy, exposing British taxpayers to debtor nations.

It is also understood that the European Commission has been modelling so called 'tight/loose' scenarios, and the impact that would have on countries, like the UK, which do not use the Euro.

Britain's influence at next week's summit will be inevitably relegated to the sidelines, as the Eurozone's powerhouses lead the debate about the currency's future, but Mr Cameron knows there could be an opportunity there.

Any attempt at a treaty change would allow him to suggest the powers he would like to return to the UK, which is red meat to those restive eurosceptic backbenchers from his own party.

The quicker this country is out of this EU circus, the better. As has been previously stated We pay in far more than We get out of it, We pander to every directive that the EU dictates &We have lost our Great British identities. The old saying that the pen is mightier than the sword, is never more true. Without a shot being fired, or a life lost, Germany is now running this once Great country. Never mind "vows to protect us" Dave...... GET US OUT.

I believe it's a net £40 Million per day! That's £14.6 Billion per year. If there was a referendum on being in europe, it would be a resounding 'NO' - that's why this and the last govt have denied us one even though they both promised it.

Mr Cameron, wait until election year. We will then have a referendum on the EU , BEFORE you go to the polls, not a 'promise' of one AFTERWARDS as we all know some people don't keep promises don't we David.

Doormouse.. it wasnt a promise, it was a cast iron guarantee... apparently there is a get out clause with a cast iron guarantee you dont get with a promise!

A banker, a school teacher, an MP and a daily mail reader are sat around a table. In front of them is a plate, on which there are 10 biscuits. The banker scoffs 9, then the MP turns to the daily mail reader and whispers ’watch out, that teacher is after your biscuit.'

I am going to try my best to be polite.
Excuse me Mr.Cameron, could you please give us the referendum to get out of Europe, as they are very slowly strangling a very British way of life, and if we are outside the EU, it we need not give a flying @#$% about what Europe think of us.
Sorry, my politeness slipped a bit at the end.

Remember the line Steve.."Its not a new treaty or a treaty chnage its a bit of tidying up!"

Bound to be trotted out and then no referendum again... supposed we could ask for another Cast Iron Guarantee?
    • Karen M  •  5 months ago
Pretty sure, any treaty change will trigger the mythical referendum, the British people have been promised by Cameron. So we wont have to worry about wrestling small points of interest back from Euorpe,as we will vote with our feet and leave. Wont hold my breath for the referendum tho..........

David Cameron says that saving the euro does not necessarily require a treaty change.. which means it does but you are not having any say in the matter.. dont care what I promised or what the law says.

May as well give us a cast iron guarantee then Dave.

if he really wanted to protect the UK he would pull us out or at least give us a referendum on continued membership. The EU is in the hands of Germans and they are crushing one country at a time till there is no resistance to their rule..

It does not matter much who is in charge, they are all singing from the same hymn sheet.
This country has been sold down the river, and unfortunately most people in the UK are stupid stupid. Like fools in love the masses follow these Imposter king John's in raiding the larder giving out all our soveriegn wealth and power to other countries and illegal immigrants.

Who in whats name when borders came down could not see that an employer would rather employ a European with multi language skills over UK counter parts, beggars belief. I saw this as an employer 10yrs ago, so what a surprise that 90% of jobs are going that way.

There are things we can do. One of them is to concentrate on the UK and business at home and provide multi language TV channels free to air from all over the EU and Asia, that way the young can have a chance of developing a language through learning and immersion.
When I was in Holland 25yrs ago I remarked to My Dutch collegues, most of which could speak 3 languages fluently, how they did this with no greater intelligence then the average; they remarked German TV and American soaps and music which are free, this with basic learning to 13yrs at school provided this basis.
Perhaps then our children in the future can compete on a world stage.

Maybe we can learn from some other countries that state you can work there under a work visa, but live and buy property is a no no, their own are served first.

We have to be selfish, we cannot afford to be generous, we are broke and our stocks are empty.

As for Cameron protecting the UK, no chance. As for Ed no chance, As for Nick no chance.

Let's stop arguing and just try and enjoy ourselves. These decisions have already been made and there's nothing we can do about it.

Banks are hoovering up tangible assets andf the general population can't or won't see that they are being sold into slavery using their own money.

britain has a lousy govt - they do nothing for the people. no democracy whatsoever. establishment running everything and totally neglecting british people. I have yet to see a political leader in UK at the grassroots who is able to understand what the people are facing day to day and tries to do something about it or atleast takes a stand towards so sort of action to combat the issues of the country. They are all sitting cozy at home making babies, indulging on taxpayer money, and doing nothing but creating more mess for the people to live with. No wonder so many people are disenchanted with british politics. There is not a single british politicians worthy to run the country that will put the people and country first.

Of course, Cameron and Sarkosy and Merkel are conspiring right now about how to deny us a referendum. Just watch!

If anyone believes that Cameron will do anything like this they will be disappointed . When he became Prime Minister I had high hopes that things would change. Dream on. He is so weak it is pathetic. The trouble with politicians, and this applies to all parties, is that so many are wealthy and don't actually need the job, so they are never going to make the big effort. They are in it for power and prestige, though they still don't seem to realise that most people neither like nor trust any of them. There are to many career politicians, they have never had a proper job and never mix with ordinary people, they rely on focus groups, which contain activists not ordinary people.

Let us see how it goes. Give IMF a greater role in solving the eurozone crises and David Cameron should take the lead in the discussion. A very cautious and intelligent movement is needed otherwise UK will be in a trap.

And we should believe him why?

What promises has he kept so far? The latest one was not making Gordon Browne's extra 50 pounds a year fuel bonus permanent.

Any treaty change should mean a referendum in the UK, otherwise I hope someone will find a way to challenge the results of the last election becaue of misrepresentation - I believe one result has already been overturned for this reason.

The latest I have heard from CAmeron is that he is going to stop subsiding unions (representing productive elements of society) but leaving in place all the tax breaks and subsidies to the evil religious parasites.

Cameron is not going to protect the UL he is hoing to protect the Euro because he and his motley crew have decided they will appear bigger abd better statesmen by doing so. He is already saying that addidtions to the treaty will not mean we get a referendum or that it will mean repatriation of powers, he is a master of obscuration like Blair was before him. Je is trying to convince us that without the Eurozone we as a country will fail which is a load of rubbish. He has no consideration for the fact that democracy and sovereignty are under threat only making sure he does what is right for the financial sector. The banks had access to the same numbers that are on the table now, yet now they refuse to lend money but before they would, another junk investment situation as before simply a different iffy deby they thought they could make money out of. Cameron is going to sell us all down the river. More money at risk either through the IMF or directly, no repatriated powers and still more risk over the coming years. Get us out, at least then we know that the incompetent bunch running Europe wont be able to impose anything on us we cannot retaliate to.
