Campaign Pushes Anthem To Top Of iTunes Chart

You'll Never Walk Alone, the anthem adopted by Liverpool FC fans, is top of the iTunes singles chart following a campaign by supporters in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disclosures.

The damning Hillsborough Independent Panel report said that 41 of the 96 Liverpool fans' lives lost in the crush at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium during an FA Cup tie on April 15, 1989, could have been saved.

The report, published on Wednesday, said a cover-up took place to shift the blame from bungling police and emergency services on to the innocent victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

Now Liverpool fans have seen the football club's anthem go to number one in the download chart to "send a message" to the nation.

The campaign to get the recording by the Liverpool band Gerry And The Pacemakers to the top was sparked on Twitter by Liverpool Walton MP Steve Rotheram.

He tweeted on Friday: "People have asked what they can do now. If you download You'll Never Walk Alone, it will send a message to the rest of the Country! #YNWAno1"

The MP then said: "Just spoke to Gerry Marsden who is supporting YNWAno1 and will donate any proceeding (sic) to Hillsborough charities. Great gesture. Great man."

The track went from number 22 to number one in just a few hours.

Mr Rotheram's final Friday night tweet read: "Currently No2! Think I am going to have dropped off to sleep by the time we get to No1. Great effort everybody, Just brilliant. #YNWAno1"

The Hillsborough panel found 164 police statements were altered, 116 of them to remove or alter "unfavourable" comments about the policing of the match and the unfolding disaster.

South Yorkshire Police, which still employs 195 officers who were on duty at the ground on the day of the tragedy, said the force would refer itself to police watchdog the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
