    Cannibal Attacker: Police Seek Witnesses

Miami police have appealed for more witnesses to come forward after a man seen chewing on the face of another man was shot dead by police.

Detective William Moreno said they were looking for people to fill in the blanks of what led to the nightmare scene beside a busy city motorway at the weekend.

The attacker, who has been identified as Rudy Eugene, 31, was killed by an officer as he tore pieces of flesh from the victim's face with his teeth.

Witnesses said the crazed man did not stop despite being shot once, so he was then shot several more times, leaving him dead.

The victim, who has not been identified, is in a critical condition in hospital. Some reports said up to 80% of his face was missing.

Detective Moreno told The Miami Herald: "We know that there were many people on the MacArthur Causeway and we're hoping they come forward."

One witness earlier told a local broadcaster he was riding his bike down the road when he saw the attack happening.

"I told him to get off," Larry Vega said WSVN-Fox 7, "and the guy just kept eating the other guy away, like, ripping his skin."

Police believe Eugene had likely overdosed on a new potent form of LSD, according to US reports.

"What's happening is, whenever we see that a person has taken all of his clothes off and has become violent, it's indicative of this excited delirium that's caused by an overdose of drugs," said Armando Aguilar, of the Miami Fraternal Order of Police.

"What's happening is inside their body their organs are burning up alive."

Meanwhile, Eugene's ex-wife has revealed she left him because he had become violent.

The woman, who has not been identified, said the couple had a short-lived marriage that lasted a year-and-a-half. They filed for divorce in 2007.

"I wouldn't say he had [a] mental problem but he always felt like people was against him... No one was for him, everyone was against him," she was quoted as saying.

She added she left the marriage because Eugene had been violent, and she had not been in contact with him for the past three years.
