Captain Britain writer: I believe in Scottish independence

    By Ian Dunt

Campaigners for Scottish independence have received support from an unexpected quarter, after the writer of comic book character Captain Britain backed their cause.

The writer of the superhero series said the move would "give us interesting new neighbours".

The comments come as Holyrood prepares for a consultation on the wording of the referendum, with first minister Alex Salmond set for a long campaign to achieve his dream of Scottish independence.

"I'm all for it," comic writer Paul Cornell told politics.co.uk.

"It would give us interesting new neighbours."

Asked if he would not feel disappointment at the end of Britain in its current form, the writer said: "No. Countries change. Sometimes, perversely, smaller units make better federations."

Marvel comic's Captain Britain character was created by Chris Claremont and Herb Trimpe in the 1970's, but his most celebrated writers are Northampton-based Alan Moore and Mr Cornell, whose run ended in 2009.

The writer frequently used the character to articulate issues around British identity, describing the national flag as "one thing that contains many".

In one scene the superhero, whose costume is an adaption of the union flag, says: "You have no idea what this flag means. It isn’t popular. It's not a gesture."

Scotland would vote on independence in autumn 2014, according to plans laid out by Scottish executive.

According to recent polling, 26% of Scots want a break up of the union while 46% oppose it. The figure is actually higher in England and Wales, where 29% support Scottish independence and 40% oppose it.

"You have no idea what this flag means. It isn’t popular. It's not a gesture." A remark that works on many levels, and gives much food for thought. Perhaps the removal of the blue background on the Union flag would give Great Britain a chance to re-brand itself.

Will the unionist slogan be something like " we will fight for the right to be dependent /dominated "within the so called union. Not very inspiring !

As a North East English Lass, it's very hard to give a comment on this without feeling my emotions raging. I like the Scottish and having travelled there for years, I certainly feel that I don't want to be separated from them - if I'm honest though, my primary feeling is Jealousy. Our Government in the South simply couldn't care less for taxpayers in the North and decides on matters that benefit them only. They ignore votes from their own people, protests, petitions from those that put them where they are and regardless of what our country is or isn't eventually we are constantly told that we are just to pay up and shut up - here in the North. Until we get a true North South Divide with our own Government, I can't see that changing so I can't blame Scotland for wanting independence.

We should not be discussing this matter ,our glorious Prime Minister should concentrate on making sure his rich ex classmates and the bankers are ok. This matter of Scottish independance is only going to divert attention from the fact that more of our children are sliding into poverty whist we give away £Billions to basket case countries.

Define poverty...do you mean not being able to buy the latest electronic gizmo? A budget and prioritising of all that lovely welfare should take care of real basic needs..which doesn't include cis and booze!

If Osbourne keeps printing pounds (another £200 billion due in March/April) on top of the £275 billion already, then savings and welfare cheques will be worth little.

To we Scots it is a very important matter. We've only waited 300 years!
Then only think that saddens me is, that unless there is chicanery - very likley- the England will be Bankrupt AGAIN!

Quote "To we Scots it is a very important matter. We've only waited 300 years!
Then only think that saddens me is, that unless there is chicanery - very likely- the England will be Bankrupt AGAIN! "...... WRONG. Read your history, a Scots King, took the English Throne, by invitation. The ONLY English involvement was the forced use of English troops as MERCENARIES, by the Scottish LORDS to remove their OWN KINSMEN from the lands to run sheep to make the money for them to have a better life in the new (Scots) English court!!!!!
