    Census Reveals 7% Surge In Population

    The population of England and Wales has increased by 7% over the last ten years - the largest growth in numbers seen in any period since records began.

    There were 56.1 million people living in England and Wales on the day of last year's census - an increase of 3.7 million since 2001, the Office for National Statistics said.

    The figures also revealed that one in six people in England and Wales in 2011 was aged 65 or over.
