Christmas is coming: The festive house display so dazzling that 1,000 people turn up to see them switched on

The Christmas decorations season has well and truly begun - and these two brothers celebrated their spectacular switch-on in style.

Builders Lee and Paul Brailsford turn their mother's house into a £20,000 display so stunning that almost 1,000 people turned up to see them switched on.

The pair started the tradition in 1994 and have now built up their display to tens of thousands of lights each year in Brentry, Bristol.

Their eye-catching display was just one of thousands which were switched on over the weekend as November became December.

Lee, 36, said: 'I just love the fact that we are bringing the local community together. We have lived here since we were five years old and everyone has known us since we were small.

'Everyone loves seeing the lights, it gives them a real boost. If we can bring a smile to people's faces then it is a real inspiration to us.'

Lee and Paul began decorating their 57-year-old mum Rosemary's home in 1994 after buying a Christmas tree shaped light.

The two brothers live just a few doors away from their mum who hosts the display as she has the biggest house.

They spend months carefully putting up thousands of lights and lining her garden with reindeer, snowmen and Santas.

Paul, 33, said: 'It brings so much festive spirit.

'You could moan about the carbon footprint but it's for charity. There are worse polluters than us.

'There are a lot of tacky ones out there. People who just fling it up and plug it in. A lot of time and pride and effort goes into ours.

'We don't drink, we don't smoke - this is where our money goes.

'It's like a masterpiece, a work of art. Our lights are our pride and joy. And as long as people keep enjoying it, we'll keep doing it.'

The pair said the display costs an extra £600 in electricity with the lights on between 5pm and 10pm every day until the first week of January.

The brothers raised nearly £4,000 last year for the Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal at Bristol Children's Hospital and hope to do even better this Christmas.
