Why religion matters in US politics

Mitt Romney, the man likely to challenge Barack Obama to become the president of the country with the most nuclear weapons, believes that in 1827 an angel called Moroni gave a man called Joseph Smith some golden plates that had symbols on them. There must have been at least a full dinner service worth of mystical crockery because the translations filled up a whole new Bible called the Book of Mormon.  Half of Mormons surveyed believe that Romney's faith is likely to count against him a survey revealed this week, with a third also believing they are more discriminated against than African Americans. Mitt's beliefs would count against him even more this side of The Pond. Tony Blair had to wait until he resigned as Prime Minister before converting to Catholicism because his spin master Alastair Campbell had commanded: "We don't do religion." Asked about a dozen times by Jeremy Paxman if he'd prayed with Dubya Bush, Blair evaded because he'd have known how deeply unappealing the British find the thought of a politician asking God for advice.

The contrast between the two leaders' religious stance couldn't have been more pronounced, with Tony Blair sneaking a quick pray then dodging into a priest hole like it was Tudor times as opposed to Dubya, the reformed coke-head alcoholic trumpeting his conversion and born again-ness. He only really got in because of the religious right in America who backed his conversion at the ballot box. Blair has since admitted religion played a huge part in his premiership but didn't want voters to think he was a "nutter". Our current crop of party leaders must feel the same, because while past Tory leaders have quoted the Bible more than the other parties, David Cameron freely admits he doesn't go to church.

[See related : Ed Miliband and Labour's plans for the economy]

Ed Miliband is of Jewish descent but had a secular upbringing and has publically stated that he doesn't believe in God. Nick Clegg has pitched somewhere in between stating he doesn't believe in God but managed to "…find religion just in time for the election" (according to 'The Daily Mail') saying something about believing in Christian values.  So although 78% of the UK population consider themselves religious no party leader does. The population of believers in America is only slightly higher at 83% but importantly they seem to be much more active, with 40% attending service weekly and 58% praying at least once a week. In a 2007 Tearfund survey only 7% of Brits consider themselves practising Christians.

Romney's religion would be an asset, like Dubya's was, were it not for oddness of some of the actions and beliefs of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, AKA Mormonism, like their history of polygamy. A leading apostle called Orson Pratt married his 10th wife when he was 57 and she was 16, although nothing really compares to the Joseph Almighty who married 32 women including some who were under 16 and others who were actually married to other men. Mitt's family weren't even in the sect of Mormons that dropped the whole polygamy thing, with his great, great grandparents preferring to flee to Mexico just to have multiple wives. That's where his dad (who was also a candidate for the Republican nomination) was born. They've done all sorts, making Scientology look fairly reasonable, they're anti-gay, only allowed black priests in 1978 and have done Baptisms for the dead, including 300,000 holocaust victims. What's worse, they're teetotal and don't even drink coffee or tea and intriguingly wear 'religious undergarments'.

But there's good news for voters in the UK. So far the Mormons are only available on the UK high street (those super-keen looking Americans in suits with name badges), with the likelihood of them progressing to high-office being zero due to our sensible separation of religion and politics.

It is Islam that is the danger in our world. The problem with American is that we have all this Freedom of Religion garbage/history to deal with and we cannot admit in our heart of hearts, that Islam is the religion of treachery, violence and death.

We can deal with the fictions of Romney';s religion, but not the bombs and kiliings of Muslims...

American politics has little to do with logic, issues and commonsense. It is all about money with religion being used as a dope on millions of people. Religion is big business in the USA with self appointed pastors spewing out their lies about creationism and the age of the Earth. The idiots in the bible belt, many of them brainwashed, tithe their monies to these millionaire pastors who use their tithing's to build themselves huge mansions and buy their own personal jets.
.The Republican Party is now made up of religious fascists who believe that humanists and atheists are worse than murderers and rapists. These people try to enforce their hatred of abortion, and stem cell research on the rest of America. These people also want an immediate war against Iran, in alliance with the Israeli fascist regime. If these people win the next Presidential election the United States will move into the dark age of superstition and political illiteracy, and the clock towards a global war will move even nearer to midnight.

Bananaman - You bent fool! - Sean is dead right....USA the biggest bunch of parasites the world has ever seen - Take the Haliburton war in Iraq, just to steal their oil and then tell the victums to pay the US 30 per cent of GDP for the next 50 yrs for the luxury of being the victums of a war crime. Though Blair joined in, `NOT in our name`, not Britian finest hour. But now Massad look after him in Israel, yes it`s true - he`s so WANTED {Should be in the Haig}.

It is true but, is not motivated by religion, always due to greed of power/money and is used as an excuse to go to war.

Who estimated 90%? land, resources and power are what most wars are fought over, surely?

It amuses me that the U.S. a major Christian country, has Persephone (Queen of the underworld) perched on top of Capitol building, and the majority of Americans don't know.

I looked at the mormon religeon and even went as far as reading their new bible, right up until the bit that says, the people split between good and evil, and the blacks went one way and the whites went the other, looked at the published date and location, southern USA mid 1800's closed the book. The mormons run their religeous scam like they run their pyramid sales corporations.

Jeremy Paxman was not the first to ask Tony Blair if he prayed with George Bush. Only about a week earlier this question was asked by David Frost on a Sunday morning show and, to my knowledge, a repeat of that clip has never been shown. I have NEVER seen Tony Blair look quite so uncomfortable. Jeremy Paxman, in my opinion, asked the copycat question hoping he's be able to pin down T.B. but he couldn't. Someone who is religious is not the same as someone with a real 'faith'. No-one can speak up for God when they have no real contact with Him.

I also find it very strange that 78% of the British public consider themselves religious while only 7% consider themselves practicing Christians.
Well once you've ruled out all the other religions *sigh* that leaves allot of the population who aren't practicing Christians but still consider themselves christian, when there clearly not, I just don't get that at all. It's like there is a unspoken taboo on becoming atheist and i don't like it.

Paradoxically, the United States has one of the most stringent separations of church and state of any country in its constitution.

I've already made a post on YA stating my belief that any mainstream UK election candidate who inferred that his/her religion was a reason for voting for them would be likely to lose their deposit.

The American evangelical fundamentalists, like the Islamic fundamentalists pose an immense danger to human progress and medical science. The election of Romney, or anyother religious idiot, to the American Presidency, would pose a very dangerous threat to world peace.

Religion plays a large part in politcs all over the world it appears, The politicians come up with an idea and pray it works. It would be much better if they thought things through. If politicians engaged their brains before opening their mouths the world may be better place.

The important thing in American politics is money, lots and lots of money, and that requires "connections" so it helps if you come from a political family as it attracts sponsors. If you scrub up well; are married with kids and have a war record; these are in your favour. There are many complications if a candidate does not profess some religious affiliation even though the political system is in some way secular. You need to look wistful and say "In God we trust" whether you believe it or not. The Mormons no longer practice polygamy and the Scientologists are a different thing entirely. It is all a big show and candidates are expected to play their role; if they make it to the presidential election then they have a list of demands from sponsors and lobbying groups to fulfill.
      That's entertainment.

American evangelicals are a danger, just as much as the Islamic fundametalists are, to world peace and progress. Both would take us back to an age of religious barbarity.

Like most Atheists, I have no problem with the religious beliefs of other people. However I do find it very irritating when people of varying religious adherence feel the need to try and convert me to their way of thinking. This seems to be a particularly Christian trait, though pretty much every religion has its own special lack of tolerance for anyone else's opinion. Religious extremism causes a great deal of the world's problems and conflicts; therefore it would be a prudent move to keep religion out of politics altogether. Can there be anything more dangerous than a leader who is convinced beyond all reason that he and his nation have God on their side?

You really should check up on your last statement. Latter Day Saints, Mormon is a nickname, serve at all levels of public office and are very civic minded. In fact, its because of our sensible separation of state and church which means that even Church members can and do, stand for office with very different political points of views without having to declare personal beliefs.

Tony blair waited unitl after his term to discus being a CATHOLIC because of the Act of Settlement which prevents anyone sitting on the throne being a catholic, and there has never been a Catholic PM since so Blair kept it a secret because of its sensitivity in constitutional live
