Chris Huhne could still be the Lib Dems’ next leader

Photo: AFP/Getty ImagesChris Huhne has suffered a setback - but could this merely be the latest step in an improbable path to the Liberal Democrat leadership?

Think about it. It's dawn on May 8th, 2015.  Nick Clegg emerges from the steps of the party headquarters in Great George Street to a flurry of snapping cameras. Faced with a drop in his party's support to the high teens, and an overall collapse in the number of MPs to around 30, he has no choice but to resign. Five years in power isn't bad going for a Lib Dem leader, after all. Now the party has to find its successor. Who are the likely candidates?

It's not unreasonable, in this scenario, to include Chris Huhne among them. There are a number of caveats to this suggestion - but their cumulative effect doesn't mean this unlikely prospect should be instantly ruled out.

The personal embarrassment surrounding the speeding points case is undeniably damaging. But by 2015 a couple of years will have passed since its resolution. And in any case, of all the mainstream parties it is the Lib Dems' grassroots who will be most inclined to forgive and forget. There is a moral stigma to betraying your wife - but it will probably not be sufficient for him to be a write-off come 2015.

Instead Liberal Democrats are more likely to remember about him is his record in government. Not as energy and climate change secretary - Huhne has not achieved much beyond establishing himself as a competent, if gaffe-prone, secretary of state - but as a coalition bruiser.

No member of the junior party has stood up for his party more in Cabinet than Chris Huhne. Who was it who took David Cameron and the Tories to task in the wake of the acrimonious AV referendum? The energy and climate change secretary, that's who. Huhne's record of bullish coalition relations stands in stark contrast with Nick Clegg's own reputation of damaging acquiescence.

This will not be forgotten. If the Lib Dems find themselves in a position to enter into another coalition after the next general election, they will be looking for a man less likely to bow down to the wishes of the senior party. Huhne could that man.

He must play his cards right between now and then. The biggest obstacle is obvious: if he is found guilty of perverting the course of justice his political career will be over for good, and a way must be found of expunging this article completely from the annals of the internet. But if Huhne escapes a criminal conviction, he will have ample opportunities to improve his future chances in a post-Clegg Lib Dem party.

A return to power, which the deputy PM made clear is a possibility, would have to be treated carefully. Huhne must not let himself be contaminated by the 'ConDem' brand, but could resume his Cabinet career if he did so on his own terms. There would be nothing worse than spending the year before the next election in a government department, doing just enough to be associated once more with the coalition.

It may be better, therefore, for Huhne to position himself more skilfully from the backbenches, playing the kind of game which David Miliband has proved so unsubtle at. The scope for meddling with the dark arts of politics is much greater without the burden of ministerial responsibility. His Westminster presence might be muted, true, but this could open up time for him to build a power base within the party.

Yes, Huhne could come back, even after what has happened today. Put it like this: if the Liberal Democrats suffer an electoral drubbing in 2015, a politician with the ability to recover from tremendous setbacks could just be exactly what they're looking for.

It doesn't matter who the next leader of the Lib Dems is, only a complete idiot would ever vote for them again. If you're Lib with a right wing slant you'd vote Tory, if you're a Lib with left wing slant you'll vote Labour. I have never, ever seen a polictical party betray everything they stood for. The Libs have betrayed everything, they have not kept their word about anything at all. We now have a true 2 party system. If they win a single seat I think the Police should be called because it would have to have been rigged!

If Huhne is guilty and eventually reappears in politics it would be yet another nail in the coffin of British decency and there are too many in there already........... We desperately need a new political party of honest people who actually represent what the majority of voters want, in other words a true democratic party, the present two and a bit parties are nowhere near that!

Can't think of any other party to fit your criteria off hand.....can you?

Nice try Allen, but if we do what Mike (above reply) says, it's our only chance - otherwise, dream on.

Huhne only has a small majority in Eastleigh. So, regardless of what happens in court, he is unlikely to be in a position to challenge for leadership.

He may be offered a safe Lib Dem seat like Fife NE if Ming decides to retire at the next election

So good old "Buff" could be back -Indignation. I remember a similar scandal some years ago with a young Peter Menedelson - whatever happened to him? What - he's a Lord! In Europe? Well my flabber has never been so gasted! How DO they get away with it? Simply, because they think we are stupid!
      • MIKE 3 months ago
They don't think we are stupid, they know it -
and treat us with appropriate contempt.

Huhne does seem to have all the right credentials to lead a party of foot and mouth prone fornicators and chancers- and he is so full of himself that an approach of 'do as I say not as I do' might just work, although he does seem to have the same inability to focus on main issues which also afflicts Clegg.

It just goes to show what an unprincipled gang of liars the Lib-Dems are. even if he is foud not guilty of perverting the cause of justice Huhne, and the Lib-Dems are unfit for government. They have broken every electoral pledge they made in their unprincipled dash to get in bed with, and make the Tories able to make the cuts.

Let's not forget that the Tories weren't their first choice.
If I recall, if Gordon Brown had been willing tom fall on his sword, they would have been willing to get into bed with a failed, defeated and discredited Labour Party. Would "the liberal left" have been calling them unprincipled then?

Steve: At least Labour was being honest with Clegg – that they couldn’t wholeheartedly support his main condition, a referendum on PR. And they wouldn’t let the LibDems dictate on other policies. So Clegg sold his soul to the Tories instead as he was promised a referendum. Clegg got screwed by the Tories (as with all other LibDem policies) and had to accept a watered down version in the form of AV. Not many understood AV and those who did didn’t want it. LibDems are now up syte creek. They have only got to blame themselves. Thanks to Clegg and Co. they are now a spent force.

The Lib Dems have always said that they are very much in favour of coalition governments, and so you are surprised that they are keen to be a part of a coalition government? The figures with any possible coalition government between the Labour Party & the Lib Dems did not add-up - they would not have been able to have maintained a commons majority on the number of Lib Dem & Labour M.P.'s added together - any left of centre coalition would have relied upon such a complex array of other smaller parties, it would have been next to impossible to have achieved.

Political parties & politicians exist to get into power - that's what they do, if they can - what on earth did you expect the Lib Dems to do? What would you be saying if the Lib Demns had allowed a Tory minority government to come to power - the comments would be, 'oh all they can do is carp from the side-lines'?

So the basic argument her from some, is that the general election of 2010 did not give 'me' what I wanted - despite the fact that it was the outcome which was handed the country by all of the electorate (all be it under an extremely unfair electoral system - which if it was changed would actually have given the Lib Dems more M.P's, not less!!!!) - so we all have to go back to the polling booths until we get the answer you like? How does that work then?

I was amazed to see a Lib-Dem spokes'person' on TV the other day saying that this was a lot of fuss over 'A minor traffic offence' - the fact is the original speeding was a minor traffic offence(?) but this man 'allegedly' persuaded his wife to take the conviction(and the points) to save his licence - this is not 'A minor traffic offence' it is PERVERTING THE COURSE OF JUSTICE and as such a MAJOR criminal offence and as such the offender can hardly say that he is 'an honorable man' and capable of being involved in running the country - still a jury will hear the evidence and decide if he is/isn't guilty (which may/may not alter my opinion)

They wont need a new leader. Hopefully the lib dem party will be dead at the next election. Proper reward for bertaying most of its principles and selling the rest for a powerless share of goverment.

who is going to vote for an mp who is possibly a blatant liar with a total contempt for the law, if found guilty he should be barred from government for life, there are a few others that should share the same fate as well

"Chris Huhne could still be the Lib Dems’ next leader". Quite frankly Alex the Lib Dems deserve all they get. The majority of Liberals will never forgive Clegg who jumped into bed with Cameron to satisfy his lust for power. Clegg is toast and he knows it, as for Huhne " the happily married man during elections" whilst at the same time having an affair with his lesbian lover...... I hope he gets what he deserves

If he and his wife are found guity of perverting the course of justice, they will both go to prison probably anyway.

Just goes to show how the overpaid politicians can get away with murder. They break all the rules, lying and cheating re expenses, breaking the law, drinking in the House of Common when they should be running the country and STILL they back each other up and commisserate for 'being caught'. What an immoral lot they are. Sling him out I say and the like.

Multi-millionaire Huhne has all the qualities for a representative of the people: Oxbridge Andrex graduate, rioted in his youth but condemns "riots" by today’s students and is a liar and hypocrite.

With this form, Huhne will make a great Liberal Leader.
    • JULIA  •  London, England  •  3 months ago
Whether or not he is convicted, I think Chris Huhne has shown himself to be dishonest & lacking in personal integrity. As a sometime Lib Dem voter I wouldn't want to see him in charge of the party ever. I think he should be drummed out for the lies he has told. It's not just about the affair, which is par for course with politicians, but the fact that he is still denying his innocence, when the facts are stacked against him. Guilty until proved innocent certainly, but I can't imagine the CPS brought this prosecution lightly. And if he is guilty he deserves to lose his seat.
