    Talking Politics

Eric Pickles’ treacherous attack on British values

There's nothing less traditionally British than a traditional Brit. Anyone who even uses the phrase — myself excluded, of course, and only for the duration of this piece — is making a mockery of our national qualities.

The great traditional British value is this: Do what you like as long as you don't stop what I'm doing. It is the value of John Stuart Mill, of Winston Churchill, of Joe Strummer. Those who demand a Christian country of Christian values are traitors to British culture.

Eric Pickles is one of them. He wants everyone to be the same: Christian, speaking English, praying to the same God. His community cohesion agenda, tellingly briefed to the Express and the Mail today, demands the rights of English-speaking Christians take precedence over all other groups.

It follows David Cameron's insistence on the role of religion in British society and SayeedaWarsi's attack on 'militant secularism' last week. Just this weekend, Pickles said he would use legislation to undo a court order preventing prayers in Bideford town council meetings.

This is becoming pernicious. It is an attempt to undo the last 50 years of British history, to pretend this country is an episode of the Midsomer Murders. It is parochial, simple-minded and intellectually barren.

Pickles is twisting laws to defeat judges, Warsi is making humiliating trips to the Vatican to play footsy with a man who sacrificed Catholic children to paedophilia, the Conservatives are behaving as if it's their intention to pretend the UK's variety can be painted in the pale water colours of a Hampshire village. The Liberal Democrats — a far more secular party - are doing nothing to stop them.

We are currently listening to some of the most backwards, reactionary rhetoric to emerge from government ministers since John Major's 'back to basics' speech, which took the village aspects of George Orwell's vision of England and redacted its industrial aspect.

I truly hope none of these ministers are having affairs, because if we catch them we're now entitled to come down on them like a ton of bricks. You can't espouse Christian values and then demand privacy. In my experience, puritans and traditionalists are more likely than most to stray from the marital bed.

The most appalling aspect of this initiative is the reference to traditional Britain, as if there is some great groundswell of hard-done by Christian zealots waiting to hear Pickles' bloated battle cry. The truth is precisely the opposition. Britain's historic quality is its association with individual freedom, not group-think.

In France, 'militant secularism' actually exists. The banning of the Muslim veil in public was an act of tyranny British political culture finds barely conscionable. Mainland Europe is generally too communitarian, too obsessed with the group rather the individual, to properly execute multiculturalism. The United States, founded by our own puritans (good riddance) has always been too religious and patriotic for multiculturalism, even if it rhetorically parrots British individualist ideals.

It is the UK which has the unique political traditions to show how multiculturalism necessarily follows from liberal ideals of individual autonomy. An Englishman's home is his castle and you are more than welcome to wear a hijab in it - or outside.

Cultural multiculturalism is merely an extension of social multiculturalism. Some people want to go to those achingly fashionable restaurants where they serve you half an orange with cumin seeds for £30. Some people want to play violent video games all day. Some people want to go to Stamford Bridge, some people want to go to transsexual Burlesque nights.

Some people want to pray to Allah while facing east, some people want to watch those dreadful channels with American evangelists saying homosexual sex creates earthquakes. That's what multiculturalism is. Freedom for all to do whatever they like, as long as they don't stop us doing what we want.

Individual freedom means group freedoms must be curtailed. That goes for sharia law, but it also goes for prayers before council meetings. Both reflect the rights of a community to enforce its views on the individuals within it. They are unacceptable.

Secular multiculuralists are not the enemies of religion. We are its defenders. Unless each religion is kept in check, it threatens the others. Muslims and Christians may be feeling awfully chummy at the moment because they consider atheism a greater threat than each other. That won't last forever. We are the nursery school teachers who make sure all the children can play in a safe area and not hurt each other.

The government's use of traditional Christian rhetoric is moving from the irritating to the dangerous. The forces ranged against it seem more interested in belittling each other — primarily through attacks on Richard Dawkins — than they are in taking it on. If the other side is mobilising we should to. Pickles, Warsi and their like are insulting Great Britain.

I applied to live in the USA, and I was left in no doubt from the start that, as someone who asked to live there, it was my job to go towards my chosen country, not for them to come towards me, in learning how to integrate.

and so it should be here but that sdoes not mean everybody cannot repect diversity. I personally think the Brits are extremely tolerant with what they have to put up with.

"put up with?????" or do you refer to the atrocious petrol, gas, electricity, water costs? the lack of reasonably priced and efficient public transport, the dismantling of our national health service, the petulant erosion of our living standards for the many, while the favoured few prosper? yes, we DO have to "put up with" a lot of undesirable things, unfortunately they originate from bloated lard-assed right-wing cretins that unfortunately are home-grown creatures.

Immigrants come to this country because it offers freedoms not available in their own countries. They are welcome, integrating and bringing the best of their culture. I do not welcome immigrants who come to take only! These same people want to bring with them all the unacceptable backward feudal views that it has taken this country many years to move on from.People comming to live here must integrate!, tolerance is two way, do not expect what you are not prepared to give.
      • curious 3 months ago
I couldn't agree more -I am very much in favor of tolerance and integration

Nigel you're right, unfortunately some people in the UK who should know better believe otherwise.

Why was the banning of veils in France tyranny, I think it was common sense and the like of Ian Dunt is wrong to think so, why should a fraction of the public be hidden from the rest, how do we associate and intergrate with people we cannot see, what about deaf people do they have the same rights, when someone has their mouth covered and you cannot lip read are your rights abused by them, the veil is not part of the religion and is used to make you feel uncomfortable of this I am sure.
      • David 3 months ago
We will never have the guts to do this in this country although most people, I am sure, agree that veils should be banned in public.
      • Twain shall meet 3 months ago
No more wedding veils in Church then?

Hiding the face is ridiculous and dangerous. If you wish to do this, then move back to a country where this is the norm. CCTV is a complete waste of time with this sort of garb and fighting crime is hindered. Try entering a bank with a crash helmet on and see what happens! A veil or burka is no different so I'm not surprised France had the sense to ban the face covering. Women are made to cover up if they visit an arab country. Here they should be made to unveil. for safety reasons if nothing else.

This article would be OK if those British traditions of 'doing what you want' extended to the British themselves, far too often in the name of 'multiculturism' we are told we cannot celebrate our traditions, heritage and beliefs because of the risk rather than the actuality of offending other groups.
      • Anthony 3 months ago
Not really. Our culture is more under threat from within than from without these days.

For instance, traditions like rolling cheeses down hills and morris dancing are more likely to be picketed by clipboard-wielding harridans from health and safety than (for instance) Muslims. Nobody, regardless of what the Daily Mail tells us, is poised to ban us from eating roast beef on a Sunday or playing cricket.

Generally when someone talks about cornerstones of British tradition being eroded they tend to pick some rather ridiculous examples. Take that shopkeeper that demanded to be sent to prison rather than weigh bananas by English AND EU measurements. He was not being told 'use the EU measurements only, or else'. He was asked to include, in as small print as he liked, the EU weight, and he went to prison thinking he was a martyr for Britannia.

And more recently, the Daily Mail ran a 'Crusade' headline about the EU's decision to make offices use energy saving bulbs. They had a pro vs con spread, with the pro of the old bulbs and the cons of the new ones. The biggest pro of the old bulbs was that we have had them for a long time. We also had feudalism and cholera for a long time, but you don't see many people demanding them back.

The problem is that there is a lot of false nationalism floating about. People seem to be squeezing our culture down to football, drinking and nostalgia. The past was apparently a perfect, Enid Blyton wonderland where we always won the world cup and went for a good pint at in a smokey pub. Hell, a while back a guy argued with me that unless a pub was wrapped in Union Jack's like a Barcelona theme pub full of sunburned expats then it didn't count as a 'British' pub. I'm not kidding.

England and British culture is not a skin colour, religion, accent or measure of weight. If the core values of our nation are falling apart then we need to look at why our kids are not embodying them. Like so many things these days the answer is to up our own game. We could be the power in Europe, if not the world, if we just stopped blaming everyone else for the fact we've lost our edge.

What he says about multiculturalism is right, but do the people of Britain really want that. Not In my experience. Cultures that have diametrically opposed views on subjects will always find these a source of conflict. We have those in this country that think women are no more than chattels to be bartered, its part of their culture. They have a mindset which will not be changed because they view other cultures as inferior.
British people have a mindset, whether its right or wrong is not the point. British people have a set of 'beliefs' that are uniquely their own & should remain that way. Just as other nations & cultures have their own. You cannot have a multicultural society that functions in a cohesive manner unless all the cultures involved are willing to compromise & if you do that your culture has been changed/altered & therefore no longer your culture & you loose your 'identity' and your sense of belonging. and that is what has happened & continues to happen at an ever increasing pace in Britain. Our young are 'lost' & feeling dispossessed. They are loosing their identity. or have lost it altogether. That is why there are street gangs etc as they seek to 'belong'.
Britain is small & getting smaller while at the same time more & more people are crowding in to what little space is left. Britain is dying & I predict unless we force the government to rethink its immigration, human rights & ethnic policies Britain will be dead in less than 50 years. It will merely be a suburb of the E.C

FACT: Studies of domestic violence consistently have found that battering occurs among all types of families, regardless of income, profession, region, ethnicity, educational level or race. However, the fact that lower income victims and abusers are over-represented in calls to police, battered women’s shelters and social services may be due to a lack of other resources.
The Brits beat their women more than the so called ethnics you so readyly accuse....not just the poor and needy but also the rich and greedy..batter their women....xenophobia started in Germany in the 1930's you seem to be in that bubble, sorry, dissappointed and in total denyal; the revesal of multiculturalism is a myth, perpertrated by dreamers like you are!! Its here to STAY, SO GET USED TO IT, DON'T BE AN iSLAND TO YOURSELF.....!

"do what you like as long as you don't stop me" is exactly what secularists are guilty of not adhering to. Christians sometimes cannot wear a cross in case an atheist is offended. People move near a church and then want the church bells to be silenced. A church near me had its access road closed for the sake of runners when a service should have been held. Even the Luftwaffe never stopped services being held there. Yes "do what you like as long as you don't stop me" would be quite nice!

"Individual freedom?" Mr Dunt, only within the last two weeks were you recommending that the Falkland Islands be given to Argentina and the British freedom of its occupants sold down the river! Your contradictory views maybe typical of today's journalists, but please do not expect to be taken seriouisly except perhaps inside the offices of 'The Sun.'

Quite strange - just had a look at the NSS (National Secularist Society) website.
They seem to know what they are "against", but not what they are "for".
      Sounds pretty anarchic to me.

Ian Dunt has it all backwards. Thanks to multiculturalism and secularism, Britain has deteriorated into a binge drinking high crime, every man for himself country. It is far cry from it's moral leadership a century ago when such Christian moralists as lord shaftsbury, William Wilberforce, Gladstone etc exercised their faith in speaking out against injustice. The secular revolution of the 1960s and 70s took individualism and materialism to the forefront. Today the nanny state governs our lives more and more because we no longer have personal moral standards to govern our thoughts and actions. Institutionalism such as day care centres for babies, old peoples homes and mental homes to throw the unwanted into, are flourishing because fewer and fewer people have the social conscience to take care of those people in their families and communities. This is the society that Ian seems to be happy with, the every man for himself attitude. The problem is that when left to our own devices with no sense of standards, faith, right or wrong, we become very uncaring. No wonder Muslims see the English in such a light, and no wonder there is such tension. But this is not the historic British standard that went to many nations just a century ago. When it comes to Christianity, it is easy to point the fingers at a few priests in the catholic church, Ian, be balanced please and think about the sacrifices that many British Christians made through religious charities that even today are at the forefront in sending money, doctors, nurses, and workers to selfishly work in places that many ordinary people would not dare to go. Remember that modern education in many parts of the world was started by British Christian funded schools and colleges. Remember the many hospitals in third world countries that were started because of the great British Christian tradition of helping the poor, needy and sick. Multiculturalism has not worked, and it will not work because the British value system today is based on binge drinking, individualism materialism and the nanny state. Muslims and others will look at such values with a sense of guile that will give other young impressionable Muslims a cause to feel justified in fighting against.

perhaps if mr dunt, would care defend some real british values he should take a very real look at the asian maffia type gangs praying on the children of english families up and down the country or would that offend his dreams of racial tollerence.
Perhaps a real investigative journalist would like to defend the british people for a change and expose these very real issues affect towns and citys up and down the country or does your investigative journalism only defend the the guilty mr dunt whilst the state and journalists turn a blind eye a very real time bomb in our society

Did you watch a little programme called My Extremist Town on BBC Three the other day to see what islam has done to Luton and how much they HATE the west? I suggest you do before downplaying the threat we face from islam. Their goal has always been to take over the west without firing a shot and people like you are enabling them. Wake up. I wonder if anyone would have the guts to make that kind of film in Bradford or Birmingham etc.

I agree with the comment from huddersfield, im not going to get involved in a whose country this is, but our traditions are dying out, my grand farther fought to keep our heritage from being taken away, having served on an education committee, i saw those of one faith saying they would changed there childs religion just so they could access single sex schools, i.e catholic faith, i feel that in this country to many people are scared to say anything in case they get called racist, or face being charged with racial hate. there is money in my borough which is given to all different nationalities, except those who are british. For example if i went to any other country and demarnded money to build a centre for my own nationality i would be told in no uncertain terms to p off.

Mr Dunt. your article is so full of unwarranted assertions that it's hard to know where to challenge you. Briefly, Eric Pickles is not imposing Christianity on anyone, merely protecting the inherited culture of our country. It is the sustained attack on that culture by militant secularists, multiculturalists and the PC brigade which is profoundly illiberal and intolerant, constituting as it does an assault on the existing values shared actively or passively by most British people. Contrary to what you claim, secularism in Britain is not the trustworthy defender of religion, but a religion in its own right which is seeking to impose its own naive, simplistic and doctrinaire values on everyone.
Perhaps you should get a job as a nursery school teacher, because you really do write some utter drivel.
