    Talking Politics

    Suarez, Evra and immigrant Britain

Mainstream British culture - and by that I mean the white working and middle-classes - has taken roughly 50 years to deal with its racism. From Enoch Powell to Stephen Lawrence, it has taken a deep look inside itself and come to some respectable conclusions. It hasn't all been plain sailing - and we're not done yet - but in general outright racism has been hammered down to a minimal level. For this, we must thank media interest, the social pariah status of racists and a curiously egalitarian element to the British personality.

Similar forces do not always act in immigrant communities. Within and between immigrant groups, racism is a day-to-day event. Luis Suarez's use of the word 'negro' was, he said, an acceptable term in Latin American communities. There's some truth to that. It's even used between lovers, in a manner which sounds odd to western ears. But in a combative situation, it is perfectly capable of being an offensive racist term.

In fact, the use of the term 'negrito' to describe blacks has a derogatory element to it. The suffix '-ito' designates something small and cute. It is often added to children's names until they are grown up, for instance. At the heart of its use, which is extremely common in Latin communities, is a subtle but telling lack of respect for black people.

In Britain, the Afro-Caribbean community is often the subject of racism from other immigrants. Those from the Indian sub-continent are very often suspicious of Afro-Caribbeans. Indian or Pakistani fathers are rarely impressed when their daughters marry white Englishmen, but they are horrified if they become involved with black Englishmen. Similar views exist in Middle-Eastern and Chinese communities. The same rules, it hardly needs mentioning, rarely pertain to their sons.

Prejudice exists within racial groups as well . Plenty of higher caste Indians in the UK hold and enforce their prejudice against lower casts on a daily basis.

It's not just racism. Otherwise liberal gay campaigners were horrified at the wave of Polish immigrants who arrived in the UK following EU expansion. These communities were extremely hostile to the gay community and there was a sense among many gay campaigners that they had been betrayed by the government.

One of the central difficulties of multi-culturalism is not the attitude of the dominant group to minorities, but of minorities to each other. It is rarely spoken about or addressed. It exists underneath the surface of the debate. For those of us who believe Britain has been immeasurably improved by immigration it is one of the great unsayables. We are so busy fighting tabloid anti-immigration campaigns we do not adopt a critical approach to inter-community relations beyond that of mainstream Britain.

That's our failure, but its repercussions are mercifully limited. The solution to inter-minority prejudice is not to tailor the solutions to each group, but to cement the links between communities in the nature of the majority culture.

Take the Equality Act, which made it illegal to discriminate in the provision of goods and services. Take the extraordinary media onslaught that greets any white celebrity who utters ill-thought out or outright racist sentiments. Take the slowly increasingly use of minority characters in TV drama. The cementing of non-racist narratives in the majority culture offers a clear indicator of what is expected of minority cultures when they operate in the mainstream.

In other words: When in Rome, behave as the Romans do.

Defenders of multi-culturalism can only make our position tenable through a rock-solid commitment to British laws and cultural values. Equality before the law, the prohibition of discrimination, the right of every individual in the community to make their own choices: these are the necessary preconditions of a successful multicultural society.

Suarez has disgraced himself on the pitch on two occasions. Once by his confrontation with Evra and then again yesterday, when he refused to shake his hand. He must be taught what it is to live in England, what that means. The FA has, for once in its live, conducted itself efficiently and wisely. Their report credited Evra with a reasonable, believable account, and criticised the Uruguayan for inconsistencies and absurdities. They employed a language analyst to explain the term to them.

The ensuing media frenzy has been interpreted as a sign that all is not well in the beautiful game. Quite the opposite. It shows that things are actually going OK. Firm, effective sanction is the solution to these instances, combined with cultural admonishment. We are not aiming for a perfect world. We are aiming for a world in which transgressions are rare and dealt with appropriately.

The real villain of the piece has been Kenny Dalglish. He let down Liverpool, the country and himself by his tepid response. By excusing Suarez — even yesterday — and attempting to pass the buck to the media he has shown he is incapable of behaving responsibly when politics touches him. Instead, he fell back on his default position of supreme loyalty to club and players. In sport that is usually commendable, but political debates are too important to be left to tribal emotions. Suarez needs to go.

everyone knows there are two multicultural Britains,There is the successful one the media and politicians like to believe exists and then there is the real one
      • Alex Berry 3 months ago
Exactly. No ones perspective matters other than the elitist politico/corporate classes. A perspective enforced by their control over all 'mainstream' media outlets.
There is a good reason why half the country no longer votes and the rest vote simply based on hating one party more than the other...we are not represented in any 'mainstrteam' form any more.
      • bobbin 3 months ago
we no longer have free speech in this country, but they cannot read what`s on our minds,I no longer vote anymore dont want to be part frauduent democrecy
    • Worried  •  3 months ago
What we should demand is that everyone is held accountable. No excuses. But first we need to be clear. For instance, is Britain a country where women are free and not subjected to any practice which is unacceptable to our way of life? Yes? then it should be insisted on and those who refuse to accept if foreign are told to exit the nation immediately, if they are citizens, the full weight of the law is brought to bear. No excuses based on culture or religion or whatever. Hold everyone to the same standards-the british standard. those who dont like it are free to exit.

The biggest problem in this country now, is sad little people that need to grow up.
If an immigrant does not wish to adopt, and adapt to the ways of this country, then why should the indigenous population be co-erced into adopting theirs. As Dunt says "when in Rome.....etc". If I dont like the beer in a pub, I go elsewhere. Shame some of these people don't do the same.
      • Steve 3 months ago
        Hi Deut,
the power of the "erase Great Britain and all its evil works" fifth column will not be stopped easily.
Just to remind everybody that the great sitcom "UK Border Force" has just started on Sky Three.
      • ALAN 3 months ago
There is no coercion of the "indigenous" population, and Deuteronanme knows that as well as we all do.
      • Steve 3 months ago
Maybe Deut overstates the case with "coerced", but there has certainly been a powerful and unchallengeable indoctrination from many sources - not least by supposedly authoritative British institutions like the BBC - in favour of the multi-cultural agenda.
Any gainsaying has resulted in the playing of the race card for at least the last two decades. It ain't far short of coercion.

The real villains of the piece are succesive governments, the pc brigade and the thought police.
If I choose to live in a foreign country I will have to abide by their laws and accept the culture,in Britain it is the opposite you can come here carry on with your own culture and beliefs and if it upsets the indigenous population, tough they have to accept it and if they don`t they can be imprsoned.
I`m sure that two world wars and the lives sacrificed for our way of life to be maintained were not fought for us to be subservient and gagged because of the way we want to live and keep our freedom of speech.
      • Neil 3 months ago
I'm beginning to think Rob that we should've done a Switzerland during the war and let them get on with it.
      • DAVID 3 months ago
It is my belief that Liverpool, their manager and Suarez have now apologised for the Evra incident. I therefore believe that we should all accept their apology and let us get on with life and football, without this incident being raised to ever higher levels.

      "Defenders of multi-culturalism... "
Trouble is that you're not defenders, you're aggressors. For you there is no conversation or debate. Other points of view are at best irrelevant, at worst, immoral or illegal. Your point of view was foisted on people and they've been allowed no right of reply.

Multiculturalism is the desire and design of politicians and not the making of working man. That is why Blair/Brown regime and their voters wanted an open door policy. What we have today is not going to change regards to racism, because each new immigrant especially from Eastern EU Block carry there ideals and cultural baggage. The more England absorbs the greater the problem will continue from a generational movement. Traditional English folk have had to accept newcomers without any recourse and no apology from the leaders above.
      • ALAN 3 months ago
"Their", not "there"! If you wrote correct English, people might pay attention to what you say.
      • Joaquin Gash 3 months ago
First sign of desperation, when they start correcting your spelling, or grammar. Just because he isn't Shakespeare dosen't mean he can't voice his opinion. Michael Heseltine was dyslexic, you know.
      • A Yahoo! User 3 months ago
        Alan.
Read the text at the second line and you will see the correct usage of the word "their" so obviously it was a typo error so if you can only post banal comments and have nothing constructive to offer in the debate then I respectfully suggest you go back to watching your TV.

Simple truth is I love the UK, and I do not see any reason why the people of the UK should change to suit the needs of anyone. I have worked all over the world and have yet to find more decent honest and upstanding people. I do not blame other cultures for being poor or dysfunctional, but I refuse to accept that my country and culture should come second to any other culture, religion, or ideology.
      • Steve 3 months ago
The rest of the world would agree with you, Peter. I do not know another people in the world who aren't proud of their country. Not necessarily their current regime or their establishment elite, but their COUNTRY. Everybodyfrom everywhere seems to be patriotic. And why not? Good for them.
Everybody except us. We aren't allowed to love our country. The liberal left play the "Little Englander" card and accuse anybody who expresses any form of patriotism of being ENP or BNP xenophobes.
It's a crazy way of looking at things.

I hate the UK, but I'm inclined to think that if people leave their countries and come here in large numbers then it means their original cultures don't have that much to recommend them.

"these are the necessary preconditions of a successful multicultural society"

Name a successful multicultural society. Racial diversity is proven to damage society, see Putnams 'Bowling Alone'. To claim the UK is a multicultural success is a bad joke and something only a deluded media luvee would claim. Racist comment is to be heard everyday, in the background away from the big ears of the authorities. The same authorities who, desiring cheap labour on tap, have used unpopular discriminatory legislation to shove immigration and "diversity" down peoples throats. Is that success? I suppose so in the same way outlawing of free speech and dissent in 1984 was a success.
    • IAN  •  Sheffield, England  •  3 months ago
The problem is no one ever asked the population of the UK whether they wanted to live in a multicultural society, so if ther is bitterness, dont blake the ethnic community, blame the political elite who always think they know best...

Ian Dunt and his like refuse to accept that Britain has been 'invaded' over the years with people mostly who are economic migrants. That is a fact. No one can be 'forced' to think that our culture can run alongside another. Enoch Powell was a great man and a kind one. He was not a racist. I am not a racist just because I want my own country and my own culture also my own religion to be recognised as Britain's true religion. Our children and grandchildren are taught about most religions now with Christianity at the bottom of the pile. Mr Dunt I don't know where you live, I just know I don't wish to live among people who have a different culture from mine. That is not going to change.
    • Bianco C  •  Glasgow, Scotland  •  3 months ago
So practise what you preach then Mr Dunt.Ask your bosses at Yahoo why there is no news of the current court proceedings against over 40 men of Asian origin on trial in Liverpool for grooming and raping young, white English girls? Double standards perhaps??
    • Karen  •  3 months ago
Enoch Powell was not a racist.

      Is Ian Dunt rhyming slang?

Racism is a word that has become more and more PC. My kids can't call a Blackboard a Blackboard, it is now a Chalkboard and just where did Baa, baa Rainbow Sheep come from ? Yet on the other hand we can call a Whiteboard a Whiteboard. When the Asian kids at my childrens secondary school call the White kids " Milky Bar kids or White trash" nothing is done, yet even say anything derogatory about the Asians or other non-Whites and it is instant suspension. It seems that everyone is scared of the R word and the law only works in the non-Whites favour. In our town we had one woman who knitted Black dolls and sold them in her shop, someone reported this and within minutes the Police arrived to give her a warning. Robertsons Marmalade removed there iconic logo because it had a Black person on it. So fair enough when in Rome, etc. But when it changes our society to justify PC and on threat of a criminal record something needs doing to establish a new balance instead of it being very one-sided. Such as the poor lad who got beat up by Asians in Hyde, the Police are treating it as a "Hate" crime, not Racist crime, but if it was the other way around would they treat it as Hate, no they would treat it as Racist. We are becoming an endangered species whilst pandering to incomers.

Just goes to show, only 'ethnics' can be racist to one another, and it's supposed to be acceptable, but only whites 'can' be racist - this article sums it up. India has the caste system, Africans and West Indians can't stand each other. Oh, yes and guess what I once heard on a radio call-in. Asians and blacks saying they 'are moving out of the areas they live in, to get away from all the Eastern Europeans'. If a white person called in to say that about them he wouldn't have got past the researchers on the radio show. Hypocrisy, just like 'positive discrimination'. There's nothing positive about it. By the way, Enoch Powell was NOT a racist.

If immigrants to this country cannot live by our rules and culture then please feel free to leave. It is fundementally wrong to try and change the culture of a country to avoid upsetting incomers. It does not happen anywhere else I can assure you. Adapt or leave.

This is nothing new about inter ethnic racism. Ian Dunt is rehashing old news. We so called dominant race the white British are being discriminated against even more. We are a threatened species we need a preservation order slapped on us. A few years ago I met a young Jewish girl . Got to know her quite well. She seemed sad sometimes and she told me her story. She was born into a very orthodox Jewish family was loved and cherished until when she was in her late teens she fell in love with a Christian boy. Her parents were horrified and forbade her to be with him. They said if she married him she would cease to be their daughter. She love them but she loved her man so she left home and married her christian lover. The father told his wife she must never be in contact with their daughter ever again and he would do the same. It was awful for this poor girl cut off from her so called loving parents. She missed her Mother terribly but she never regretted her decision to marry her man. What is so sad its the parents who are cruel and racist when their offspring marry outside the community.
Enoch Powell was not a racist. He was a highly intelligent and kind man who foresaw the troubles ahead. He actually thought immigrants would enhance our country but should be done in a slower way so assimmilation would be easier. He has been villified ever since. How right he was.

Funny thing Mr Dunt, none of my friends and people i know, believe in the bulls##t you have been writing, and neither do you i suspect. Multiculturism through massive immigration was thrust on the british people on a scale not seen anywhere in the modern world. Laws were passed to keep us all quiet, but that did not stop people from moving away. I can list at least five major cities that are almost completely made up of immigrants. So why have people who have lived in their towns for generations moved away on such an unprecedented scale.!!!! Its bloody obvious to me.
    • Paul  •  3 months ago
Maybe to play for a team you should be born in or near the town. That would sort out a lot ot the difficulties. It is utterly ridiculous buying in players from overseas to play as if they were from "Manchester" or "Sunderland" and the root of intercultural conflict (as opposed to interracial)
