Norfolk: Dead Couple Were On Boating Holiday

A couple found dead in a river in the Norfolk Broads were on a boating holiday from their home in Surrey, it has emerged.

Detectives are trying to establish what led to their deaths after a 13-year-old girl was found alone on a rented boat on Saturday.

Police found the bodies of the pair, who were in their 40s, in the River Bure, between Salhouse Broad and Wroxham Broad, on Sunday afternoon.

Their deaths are being treated as unexplained, but officers say they are not searching for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

The woman is believed to be the girl's mother, and the man her mother's partner.

Post-mortems are being carried out to establish the cause of their deaths.

The search began after a member of the public realised a hire boat had not been returned.

Police later found the boat moored to a tree near Salhouse Little Broad. The girl was discovered on board unharmed.

She spent the night in protective police custody and has been informed of the developments. She is currently being comforted by relatives.

The boat has been recovered and returned to a boat yard at Horning where it will be examined.

Specialist river police are at the scene and police tape prevented pleasure boats entering the shallow inlet where the boat was moored.

The area is an isolated spot with no official mooring. It is surrounded by forest and marsh with no foot access.
