Delhi probing student's beating death

NEW DELHI (AP) — Authorities in the Indian capital are investigating the beating and subsequent death of a 20-year-old university student from the country's remote northeast as a possible hate crime.

Several hundred people protested Saturday outside a police station, demanding justice in the case. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also asked investigators to look into the police response.

Police arrested two shopkeepers Friday night after being criticized for doing little after Wednesday's altercation. Officials say Nido Tania was beaten by shopkeepers who had ridiculed his appearance, and died in his bed several hours later.

Tania was the son of a member of the Arunachal Pradesh state assembly.

Many indigenous people from India's northeast, some ethnically closer to groups in Myanmar and China, say they encounter racism and discrimination in the rest of India.
