Doctor Who Stars Storm National TV Awards

Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan stormed the National Television Awards last night.

The timelord and his female sidekick took home best Male Drama Performance and Best Female Drama Performance respectively.

Karen Gillan, who is leaving the BBC1 show, said she had enjoyed the "time of my life".

"I will never have as much fun again."

Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat took to Twitter to congratulate Smith and Gillan, writing: "Mexican wave among all the Who fans please! I'll start."

The night was not entirely Doctor Who's. The show failed to claim the prize for Best Drama, which went to ITV1 period success story Downton Abbey.

Rob James-Collier, who plays Thomas, joked that the show's popularity had more to do with scheduling than anything else.

"It helps that we're on after X Factor," he said.

The fiercly fought soap battle saw Coronation Street triumph, taking home the Serial Drama award.

Katherine Kelly, who left the show this week, picked up the Serial Drama Performance award for her role as fiesty Becky McDonald.

Veteren presenter Bruce Forsyth presented Jonathan Ross with the Lifetime Achievement award, who said he was flummoxed by the accolade.

"I'm amazed, like so many of you are, that I'm still working," Ross said.

The award for the best Talent Show went to The X Factor, while This Morning won the Factual Programme award.

Alan Carr triumphed in the Talk Show category for his show Alan Carr Chatty Man, beating Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross and the ladies from Loose Women.

The Outstanding Contribution award went to Take That star and XFactor judge Gary Barlow.

The Military Wives, who topped the charts with their Christmas single Wherever You Are, performed on stage at the O2 Arena, along with Bruce Forsyth and X Factor winners Little Mix.

X Factor!! REALLY!!? To be honest it gets worst every year. Do you reckon this is a ploy to make people watch the next season?

As for Dr Who, More people like Neil Gaimen should be writing stuff for the show. I think Idris was one of the most interesting characters in Dr Who in a VERY long time.

Mark Gatiss is good too, but I agree, would love to see a Clive Barker Episode! or a Kim Newman episode, just to give it a few more odd angles and I would like to see the return of some more old baddies just to see a new take on them too, I do think that they have gone too far with the humour and miss some of the Darkness they had with Eccleston and Tennant

I couldn't agree more: these characters are, in my opinion, a waste of space and have no talent.

... Hmmm, Matt Smith is a mere puppet compared to the amazing DAVID TENNANT (yes, his name should outshine) and my lasting regret is that David has refused to make a cameo appearance as the 10th Doctor in the 11th Doctor's show.

... since that self-loving bimbo Katie Price arrived on the scene, it's been considered the in-thing to be as pretty as can be but vacant. You just have to look at that horse faced bint, Stacy Solomon to discover that brain-dead bimbo's are THE role model of choice for vacuum-headed teenage girls who think they will impress by giggling like a maniac on acid and thinking they are more important than everyone else around them (yes, she actually said that on live television recently, when read a list of famous people she said and I quote, ''yeah, but they're not as famous as me'' and began giggling like a cretin).

See you in the drum then, the first meads are on you.

Watching that Awards programme last night was in some aspect's, was an insult to public intelligence. We are relay are getting desperate for viewing. The person's whom devise these TRASH progamme's, must have the intellect of a " Rocking Horse "

Says it all for me when Ant & Dec win for the eleventh year in succession for doing what???? It shows either an lack of opportunity to others or more than likely a lack of talent coming through in middle of the road, family entertainment. Everyone these days has to 'have an edge' which usually means crudity or foul language

I couldnt bear to watch the programme as I knew it would be the same old rubbish. Why are we supporting this boring programme which serves up the same year after year.

The majority of these awards are a complete farce. No doubt voting figures were NOTG given so how do we know the voting wasn't fixed LIKE WITH X FACTOR and in all probability the majority of those idiots wasting their money voting would be the under 25's phoning on their mobiles (as they appear not to have any idea of the value of money) and they also dont realise they are helping fund the TV companies profits.
Most of us over the age of thirty and definitely those of us over the age of 50 have more sense than to waste our money phoning in votes as we realise that the voting is invariably fixed ans we are denied any means of verifying the accuracy of the voting figures - unlike 30 years ago when we were given to exact voting figures for all telephone voting........ Like everything else these days, anything to con money out of the unsuspecting and only allowing voting on premium telephone lines and then denying or refusing to release the voting figures..... NOT ONLY A FARCE, BUT I SUSPECT A COMPLETE FIX..
I do however agree that Downtown Abbey and Bruce Forsyth both deserved their awards, as for the others,Icwill refrain from making any comments.

Been a Whovian for about 36 years but I have to say RTD and Moffat have come up with muck storylines.
