Doctors Astounded As Baby Weighs In At 16lb

A woman in Texas has given birth to a record-breaking baby who weighed in at more than 16lbs.

The baby boy - JaMichael - was born to Janet Johnson and Michael Brown in hospital in Longview, Texas .

"We're just amazed," Ms Johnson told the Longview News-Journal.

"I can't believe he's that big.

"A lot of the baby clothes we bought for him will have to be returned. They're already too small for him to wear."

The hospital also had trouble kitting out such a large baby.

He is the heaviest ever born there, and its nursery for newborns does not have nappies big enough to fit him.

The little chap's size, according to local reports, is connected to gestational diabetes which his mother developed during pregnancy.

The condition causes a pregnant woman to become resistant to her body's own insulin and to pass higher than normal amount of sugar to her baby, who stores the extra calories as fat.

JaMichael will be spending his first few days of life in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit to regulate his blood sugar.
