England Beat Sri Lanka In 1st ODI

Cook Nears Double Ton As England Take Charge

England won the first one-day international against Sri Lanka by 110 runs despite storms at the Oval.

James Anderson inspired England taking 4-18 as Sri Lanka slumped to 121 all out chasing a revised target of 232 in a rain-shortened match.

England made 229 in their 32 overs after a storm halted play for three hours and Sri Lanka's target was subject to a Duckworth Lewis amendment.

It was Alastair Cook's first game in permanent charge of England's one-day side.

He fell for a disappointing five, but was delighted with his team.

"It was an outstanding performance from all the bowlers with Jimmy up front - full credit to him, he deserved the wickets and he was begging me for one more over so he could get five" he said.

His Sri Lankan counterpart Tillakaratne Dilshan wasn't too disappointed by the defeat.

"The short game can go either way - they batted very well and we had to take a chance but it didn't work."

Anderson's opening spell of 3 for 14 from four overs knocked the stuffing out of the Sri Lankan top order and their innings never recovered.

Craig Kieswetter made 61 and was the mainstay of the England total hitting two sixes and four fours as he passed 50 in one-day internationals for the third time.

Morgan chipped in with 45, Kevin Pietersen 26 and Jonathan Trott 23 with Malinga picking up three wickets including two late on.

The teams now head to Leeds which will stage the second match of the series on Friday.
