England-mad neighbours clamber up scaffolding to hang 110 St George’s flags

A couple of England-mad neighbours have taken their support of the national team to the extreme - by decorating their houses with more than 100 St George's flags.

Football-mad Marc Wright, 39, and neighbour Darren Pollard, 40, have a long standing competition to out-do each other when England play in a major tournament. But this year the pair have gone a step further by adorning their homes with 110 flags and banners.

Patriotic Marc has decorated the entire side of his semi-detached house in Bulwell, Notts, in the colours of the national flag. In response, Darren used 50ft of red fabric to transform the side of his property into a giant St George's Cross.

The pair say they will keep adding flags to their homes for as long as England stay in the competition.

“We've done it before during major tournaments England are in, but this time we've done a bit more,” said builder Marc."It's a bit of fun, but everyone really likes to see it. We've done it for a few years. I think it's important that people get behind their country.

"A lot of people had bunting up for the Jubilee weekend, so we wanted to carry it on for the Euros."

The pair went to extremes putting the decorations up during the Jubilee Bank Holiday - even using scaffolding to get to the top of their homes.

Darren, 40, added: “We really enjoy doing it. I've got some flags in the house which we haven't used as well. People around here really like it. We are supporting England, so we see no reason why we shouldn't do this."
