Labour 'must unite behind Brown'

Epolitix - Sunday, April 20 11:12 am

Labour will "ensure defeat" at the next general election if the Party fails to unite behind Gordon Brown, David Miliband has said.

As the row over the abolition of the 10p tax rate continues, the foreign secretary said that Labour needed to change its approach if it wanted to win a fourth term in office.

He used an article in the News of the World to warn that the Party had become the "political underdog" and called on the government to "see the world through the eyes of voters".

Praising Brown's "strong values and deep convictions", Miliband said Labour needed to "put up a fight, show our determination what is wrong with the country".

"People will only listen to our claims about what we have done right if we are candid about what we have not," he wrote. "Employment has never been higher but people are worried about housing.

"Crime is down but people think crime has gone up. Universal nursery education has been delivered but more and more people are concerned about care for elderly parents."

Some 70 Labour MPs and six ministerial aides have raised concerns that abolishing the 10p band would leave low earners worse off.
