Eric Joyce MP Charged With Common Assault

MP Eric Joyce has been charged with three counts of common assault after an alleged fight in a House of Commons bar.

The 51-year-old MP for Falkirk had already been suspended by the Labour Party until the investigation was completed.

Staff at Strangers Bar who were on duty on Wednesday evening were later interviewed at Belgravia police station.

Officers have also interviewed MPs who were present during the alleged attack.

It is understood police were called to Strangers Bar in the Commons at about 11pm on Wednesday.

Commons Speaker John Bercow has asked MPs not to discuss the incident in the Chamber.

"Members will be aware of reports of a serious incident in the House," he said.

"I have been informed by the Serjeant at Arms that the honourable member for Falkirk has been detained in police custody.

"The matter is being investigated. I take this matter very seriously, as do the House authorities."

Mr Joyce, the MP for Falkirk since December 2000, served in the Army Education Corps before pursuing a career in politics.

And cut out the smoking too. They can still smoke in parliamentary bars unlike the pubs that we, the plebs who pay their wages, drink in !

He was the top expense-claiming MP in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and the first to top £1m in cumulative expenses. I guess it's a total coincidence that he also behaves like a ned.
      .
Things happen in life which we regret later but I'm not sure I would want him as my MP.

any phone videos, there seems to be of everything else. I would bet this is not the first time an Honourable Gentleman has got smashed out of his tree, especially our Scottish brethren who dont seem to mind a fight on an evening. I actually wonder in all truth how much damage was done, probably to someone's ego which seems to be the norm these days. Assault used to mean a bloody nose at least, and now it is just a shove

This "Honourable member", if he cant hold his drink and resorts to violence is just as bad as some of the characters he represents-call me old fashioned-but if found guilty obviously needs the sack and a custodial.

The palace of Westminster should lose its liquor licence for continuing to serve customers after they have become "tired and emotional."
Obviously a lack of proper supervision - they need bouncers to control their neddish clientele.

The ironic thing is, as an ex-army officer he would have had men brought in front of him to be punished for exactly the same offence.

The police would be better of investigating Commons Speaker John Bercow rather waste their time on someone who has just done the public service.....
