FA Strips John Terry Of England Captaincy

Footballer John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy for the second time amid growing concern over his pending race abuse trial.

The move follows the adjournment of the trial until July 9 - nine days after the Euro 2012 finals come to an end.

The Football Association said it is concerned about the impact this could have on the team during the tournament.

In a statement the FA said: "The FA Board expected the trial to be concluded prior to the European Championship.

"Further to Wednesday's confirmation that the trial will not take place until after the tournament, the board has... collectively decided it is in the interests of all parties that John has the responsibilities of captaincy removed at this time.

"This decision has been taken due to the higher profile nature of the England captaincy, on and off the pitch, and the additional demands and requirements expected of the captain leading into and during a tournament.

"The FA Board can confirm that he has not been excluded from the squad and that Fabio Capello is free to select him for the Holland fixture on February 29 and the European Championship."

There has been no comment so far from Terry, who was reportedly informed of the board's decision by FA chairman David Bernstein in a phone call.

The Chelsea skipper is accused of racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a league game in October.

England coach Fabio Capello's position has always been that Terry, who denies the charges, is innocent until proven guilty and that he should continue as captain until the trial is over.

There was said to be some nervousness among board members as to how the Italian would react, with some fearing he will see it as undue interference in team affairs.

He took the captaincy away from Terry in 2010 over his alleged affair with the ex-partner of former Chelsea teammate Wayne Bridge - but later reinstated him , saying he was the best man for the job.

It is thought Terry will still travel with the England team to Poland and Ukraine for Euro 2012 even though the squad could also contain Ferdinand's older brother Rio.

Rio Ferdinand, who has been a staunch critic of Terry, was handed the captain's armband after it was first taken away from him. Rio has said he does not want it back.

Pressure had been growing for the FA to remove Terry as skipper again.

Damian Collins, a Conservative MP who sits on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said: "He is in a public position as England captain.

"Anyone else in a public position faced with such a criminal charge would stand aside from their position and then, if cleared, be able to return to that position."

Piara Powar, the executive director of European anti-discrimination body Football Against Racism in Europe (Fare), said on Twitter: "Innocent until proven guilty.

"But should John Terry remain as England capt through the Euros? I can't see how he can."

Terry is said to have racially abused Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League game at QPR's Loftus Road stadium on October 11.

Terry , 31, has vowed to fight the charges, which carry a maximum fine of £2,500.

In a statement issued after a court hearing on Wednesday, his legal team said: "Mr Terry looks forward to the opportunity to clear his name.

"(He) denies making any racist statement and will establish in court that he is not guilty of any such offence.

"Mr Terry has never racially abused another player in his entire career."

It seems to me that pretty soon the slightest action which can be stretched out to be able to be construed as having the slightest hint of racism will soon carry the death penalty!

        You could be right.

Only until Sepp Blatter stands down or is removed, then the FA will have no need to hold up a huge placard saying, "Look what we did, we can't be racist like Blatter is. Can we have the World Cup now?"

Woah Ann, get some perspective here, you're saying using racist language is on the same level as rape, paedophilia or murder? Last time I checked no one ever died from being called a name! He's an idiot of a footballer who said something moronic (allegedly) but he sure as hell doesn't deserve to die for it. Its simpletons like you that put race relations back! Oh, and for the record, im of mixed race.

Why is the trial being deferred? This just allows the circus to continue. It will impact on him and the England team until the trial is over. Surely it would be best for all if it was done sooner. he can clear his name or be proven guilty. The FA can then deal with this issue of rcism once and for all. Racism affects people of all colour and this charge, due to the fact that it is the England captain is significant.

Seems odd that Terry faces prosecution for racist abuse, and yet the Argentinian Liverpool player who was guilty of the same offence got away with a fine and a ban from the FA. All this charge of racial abuse is nonsense, my experience is that those who cry racial abuse are the ones who are the real racists. Isn't it time that these people started acting like proper men and faced their demons rather than acting like mummy's boys! I wonder how they would have fared in the trenches in World War 1.

      Vote with your feet.!

Dont go to any games that Ferdinand is taking part in.

When the gate takings are going down they may just be forced to rethink.

John Terry will have his day in court, (unlike Diane Abbott) and must be presumed innocent, unless found guilty. Whatever Terry said, or didn't say, was between him and Ferdinand.
Diane Abbott meanwhile, said nothing, she put her racist views in writing, and no-one on the front benches are baying for her blood.

This is what Multiculturalism has done to this Country. A system forced on us by the people we voted in to rule on our behalf. You can not change peoples feelings with laws only alienate the indigenous population against the system. The Government has created Racism itself and does not how to handle it. I despise parties such as the BNP but fear there strength is growing and the recent riots are but a begining.

This is another 'pretend it doesn't exist' issue. I know at least 80% of my friends work colleagues and social circle are all racist to some degree to one minority or another be they muslim, black, pakistani, white or otherwise. The simple fact is people tolerate each other, nothing more. Trying to peddle make believe 'multicultural society is great' stories is utterly false and untrue. The more people get it rammed down their throats the more they will rebel against it and this in turn gives more credence to far right parties and fanatical loonies.
Al Qaeda are nothing more than the Nazi's of 50years ago .... the next Western Hitler will emerge in the next 50 years for sure, history always repeats itself ....

Just because one politician doesn't know the basic principles of English Law, i.e., innocent until proven guilty, the hysterical, ill informed media, decide to make the news instead of reporting it, . All quite pathetic and proves that our once high standards of news reporting have declined to such an extent that we can no longer tell fact from fiction, ideals from reality or truth from propaganda.

What are we coming to. His captaincy removed and he hasn't been convicted yet. I myself was unfairly accused of racism and lost my job. I was on probation so I did not have real rights so it was easier just to get rid of me. I did not have a fair hearing and I know only to well how it feels to be treated unjustly.

Trial by media seems to be replacing "innocent till proven guilty" in a court of law.You are now tried ,convicted & sentenced by the media.
    • Carol C  •  Ipswich, England  •  3 months ago
I thought UK law stated that a person was innocent until proved guilty. Or does this not apply in cases alleging racism?

So what about the story (Dale farm) of the Pi”*y who threw tea in the face of official and called a bailiff a BB? Nothing, that’s what, because it has no long running press coverage to it. What the hell has happened to this nation? Are we all members of Opus Dei with a relish of self flagellation? We only seem to highlight anything when a white does something but cover up the black transgressions Dianne Abbot, stoning couples, raping old white folks.

Thank God (yes the Christian one) I live in Spain now.

Police involved over a racist remark Terry may, or may not have made. Police arrest Chelsea fan for racial abuse on a train so when are the police getting involved and arrest Di Abbott for the racist remark she made in puplic
    • Zac  •  3 months ago
So Ferdinand, who felt aggrieved he lost the captaincy by Capello not backing him, uses the racist card via his brother to get Terry removed too. Sour grapes and a sick British justice going hand in hand.
