Facebook denies reports that site is 'leaking' old private messages

Facebook has denied that the site is 'leaking' private messages by posting them openly on users' Timeline pages for anyone to see.

Site users became alarmed over the past day after reports emerged in France that previously private conversations were now openly shown off on the site's redesigned profile pages.

The leaks were reported in French newspapers including Le Monde.

Facebook issued an official response saying, 'A small number of users raised concerns after what they mistakenly

believed to be private messages appeared on their Timeline.

'Our

engineers investigated these reports and found that the messages were

older wall posts that had always been visible on the users' profile

pages. Facebook is satisfied that there has been no breach of user privacy.'

Facebook's redesigned Timeline profile is a new look for user's profile and Wall pages.

The 'new look' was gradually rolled out over several months and became compulsory on August 8 this year.

The site's spokesperson claims that the 'private' messages were merely wall posts which are now visible on Timeline, and that these posts had been visible since Timeline launched.

Facebook's spokesperson told Techcrunch that they had individually checked each reported leak and that so far, no private messages had been revealed.
