Five Foods Every Athlete Should Incorporate into Their Diet

Athletes need to take care of their bodies from the inside out. Energy is needed for endurance, and protein is needed to feed muscles.

I know that if I do not eat properly my workout will suffer. Exercising and nutrition go hand in hand. I will highlight five foods that should be incorporated into every athletes diet and explain why.

    #1 Oatmeal

Oatmeal is rich in B vitamins, and it is great for athletes because it supplies them with a complex carbohydrate that is gradually digested. In addition, oatmeal is high in dietary fiber, which is why it is able to lower cholesterol.

I incorporate oatmeal into my diet by eating Luna Bars, a nutrition bar for women. They contain oats and oat flour, in addition to several other healthy ingredients.

    #2 Peanuts

Peanuts provide the energy and protein needed by athletes. Peanuts also provide an abundant source of arginine. Arginine is an amino acid that makes nitric oxide, which opens blood vessels. Blood vessels that are open produce better circulation and blood flow to the body, particularly to active muscles. Research also suggests that arginine may reduce the size of white fat cells.

My favorite way to enjoy this power packed food is by eating a peanut butter and honey sandwich.

    #3 Potatoes

Potatoes are one of my favorite foods because they taste good and fill me up. The fact that potatoes replace potassium, an electrolyte, is an added bonus. Sweating causes the body to lose both potassium and salt, so add a healthy dose of salt to your spud to replace both electrolytes.

    #4 Flaxseeds

Flaxseeds are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which are good fats that help reduce cholesterol and keep blood sugar steady. Flaxseeds are also known to help the body metabolize fats better.

I fill up on flaxseeds by eating Honey Almond Flax Kashi Granola Bars. They make for a great midday snack.

    #5 Bananas

Bananas provide the energy and upbeat mood that athletes need for motivation. Bananas help with mood because they contain tryptophan, a nutrient that encourages a serene, satisfied mood.

Bananas are inexpensive and can be purchased year round. If your bananas are getting too ripe, cut them in slices and freeze them in a plastic bag. Frozen banana slices are a cool, calorie friendly treat.

Try adding these five nutritious and delicious foods to your diet. I believe you will be happy you did, I know I am!
