Five Men Cleared Of Drug Dealer's Murder

Five men jailed for life over the murder of a drug dealer in an "execution-style" killing have had their convictions quashed by the Court of Appeal.

Kevin Nunes, 20, an amateur footballer who was on the books of Tottenham Hotspur, was found dead in a country road in Pattingham, Staffordshire, on September 19, 2002.

    He had five gunshot wounds.

Levi Walker, Adam Joof, Antonio Christie, Michael Osbourne and Owen Crooks - all from the West Midlands - were found guilty of the crime at Leicester Crown Court in 2008.

But three judges overturned the convictions after hearing that there had been "failures" in disclosing information on key prosecution witnesses to the defence team.

In December, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation into four senior police officers over allegations of misconduct in the case.

Richard Whittam QC told the judges that the IPCC inquiry was ongoing.

"I am not going to say anything that would compromise that inquiry," he added.

The convicted men, four of whom watched the hearing via videolink from prison, had been sentenced to between 25 and 28 years.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it would no longer seek to uphold the verdict and would not apply for a retrial.
