Flats Evacuated After Anti-Terror Raid

Residents of six flats evacuated in Greater Manchester will be allowed to return to their homes after suspicious substances found during a police raid were declared safe.

Police investigating the possession and distribution of indecent images raided two houses in Horwich, near Bolton at around 10am.

During the search of one of the properties in Cheriton Gardens some suspicious substances were found and nearby flats were evacuated while they were investigated, Greater Manchester Police said.

"It is hoped that residents will be allowed to return to their properties within the hour," a spokeswoman said.

A cordon was put in place and residents and motorists were advised to avoid the area while emergency services were working the scene.

A 38-year-old man from Horwich was arrested during the raids on suspicion of possession of indecent images, offences under the Terrorism Act 2000, including possessing information likely to be useful for a person committing or preparing for acts of terrorism, and offences under the Explosives Act.

The raids were supported by officers from the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.
