Former Kate Middleton chooses her charities

LONDON (AP) — She's married into the royal family, and now the former Kate Middleton is moving to define her new role by choosing the charities she will support.

The Duchess of Cambridge has accepted honorary positions with charities that deal with a range of issues, including tackling drug addiction and helping young people, St. James's Palace said Thursday.

The palace said the positions reflect her "personal interests in the arts, the promotion of outdoor activity, and supporting people who are in need of all ages, especially young children."

The royal, who married Prince William in a gala ceremony last year, became a patron of Action on Addiction and the National Portrait Gallery. She has also become a royal patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices and The Art Room, and a volunteer with the Scout Association.

Patronage raises the profile of the charities the royals support — bringing attention to their causes. It is also considered important to the members of the royal family, because their support shows their commitment to worthy causes.

"The duchess has chosen to support organizations that complement the charitable work already undertaken by her husband," the palace said in a statement.

The late Princess Diana, mother to Prince William, was active in supporting numerous charities, and worked with organizations to help AIDS patients and remove land mines from conflict zones.

The duchess' list includes The Art Room, which uses art to help children increase their self-esteem, self-confidence and independence. The world renowned National Portrait Gallery promotes an appreciation of portraiture in all forms, and maintains a vigorous outreach program.

The duchess, a former Brownie, also chose to volunteer for the scouts, who offer activities for over 400,000 young men and young women in Britain.

The duchess is already a patron of the charitable foundation Prince William founded with his brother, Prince Harry.

Are we being weened into her marital status and name or what? Up until now it's been Kate Middleton despite her marriage. Now Yahoo is labeling her as the "Former" Kate Middleton. The average age of writers, proof readers and editors at Yahoo must be very young, or they falsified their college records, or were hired on how beautiful they look. Their constant flubs always add unwanted humor or disdain to the actual article.

I thought the same thing when I saw the headline.

The artist formerly known as that symbol.

Speaking of flubs, it's "weaned", not "weened".

        Just sayin'.

I wish Diana were here to see her sons and her new daughter in law. I am sure she would be proud and would have a great relationship with Kate. I miss Diana.

You miss her, you knew Diana did you. She would not of had a great relationship with Kate. Reason being, that the lime light would of not been on her.
Diana had two sons from two different fathers, if she was had not of been married to Charles (future king) she would of been in a flat on the dole claiming social income, an been on the Jeremy Kyle show. Bet your bottom doller your thoughts would of been different about this woman that you miss so much.

Like some of the comments here, I'm so annoyed by the headline. To be frank, it's quite stupid.

She is supporting a drug addiction charity? Wow that is really progressive and admirable of her. Thank you for supporting those who so often are vilified by society.

As I agree the title could use some work, I couldn't believe all the negative comments about this article. The bottom line is she is choosing to help others.

The article should state that she is choosing the charities that the citizens of Great Britain will support. They pay her allowance. I'm amazed the citizens allow such a large sum of money to go to an inbred family to support their lavish lifestyle.

The same could be said of the Kardasians and the USA helping them to get rich performing their idiotic antics while you all watched and called it entertainment.

The Queen supports herslf mainly, but does get an allowance from the government. Only a few members of the royal family get paid an allowance. The royal family do so much for Britain and the article talks about charlities 'Kate' is supporting. No royal who gets an allowance from the goverment just sits about doing nothing. Unlike many folks collecting a welfare check from the government each month.

The amount of money that England (or for that matter the UK) earns from tourists who are interested in the royals and pay to tour their castles and their burial grounds and cathedrals and colleges they attend and buy all manner of souvenirs with their faces on it is immeasurable. It seems to me to be a reciprocal arrangement.

Former Kate Middleton? Do the writers for Yahoo have some kind of emotional issue with the change to her married name? Maybe they will get it by their anniversary.

NOTICE MEDIA WRITERS: You did not continue to refer to Princess Diana as the former Lady Diana Spencer when you gushed about her. Get smart. Her daughter-in-law is Duchess Catherine. Get rid of the Middleton maiden name or be embarrassed by people smarter than you!

Hilarious!! We beg Yahoo writers/contributors to refer to her as the Duchess of Cambridge or Duchess Catherine, NOT Kate Middleton, and when they finally start to listen, they give us "Duchess Kate" and "Former Kate Middleton". Really? I kid you not, this cracked me up. It's obviously a desperate attempt to keep those extra search engine hits. I'm starting to feel sorry for people who type 'Kate' or 'Kate Middleton' into search engines, because these are the kind of poor excuses for articles they're getting stuck with.

I think you have some issues, you need to go on the Jeremy Kyle show.
