Expect no factories will close in Germany - makes you wonder doesn't it

They plan to close down Bochum, Germany. The main problem is GM - GM is not allowing Opel/Vauxhall to develope as a worldf wide brand and to export their products e.g. to China, Middle East and - why not - to the USA. GM wants Vauyhall/Opel as a regional - means: European brand. When I worked in the Middle East I saw no Vauxhall/Opel car , but GM products only. I spoke with some natives and they told me that they preferred Vauxhall/Opel, however could not buy it due to GM's policy.

Britain is the cheapest and easiest place for multi-nationals to shut down and pull out of.This is because of the last Government, supposedly Labour and supported by the Unions, not signing up to E.U. legislation that gives workers added protection in cases of redundancy e.t.c.
I used to be a staunch labour supporter,I used to actively recruit people to my Union, now I'm sick of both of them,self-serving hypocrites the lot of them.
I don't support any extremist party but I can see why others do,the ordinary person here has no voice,.Next time the rioters won't be just after a free pair of trainers or be largely thugs causing trouble for the sake of it.

How do Vauxhall Motors manage to sponsor the England Football team with no money. I remember when I left school most of my friends got jobs at Vauxhall motors in Luton. At that time the plant employed well over 20,000 people working around the clock shifts. The Town was also full of small companies making components for Vauxhall. The only thing made in Luton now are bombs.

sorry colin the good old days are well gone

Part of the problem stems from unions and militant workers. The time I think you talk of Colin, the UK was producing poor quality cars at a higher cost than elsewhere in the world including Europe.

We're all going to be working at Mcdonalds or Asda before long.

Seems to me that a job at a fast food outlet or a supermarket will soon be viewed as a brilliant job to have - and how scary is that exactly.

Except we won't: because at this rate no-one will be able to even afford a Mucky D, or to go shopping!

Paul Hill gets a lot of "thumbs up" from people who know diddly squat about motor industry. GM, filthy Americans, do not have factories in France, dumbo Hill.

No factories will close in Germany because there government through hell or high water will always stand by there workforce unlike the tories who cannot even give work to our own plants over here prime example bombadier.I do admire the Germans, they do plan long term, and have a strong manufacturing economy.

uk gov could half VAT. The current 20% is killing new car sales off, 20 grand car is 4k VAT even befre all other taxes. Result you cannot sell them.
The Con,dem / Lab parties they are all in denial living in the Westminster village, The EU is the net cause of most of our difficulties, wake up britain we need idependence now !

The UK is in dire straits.Violence has spiralled out of control, knife crimes and guns, and big names going bust. And they say no recession !! this will hit a lot of people if it happens. We won the war but look at the mess we are in ! whoever has been in power ruins it.The next lot are left to pick up the pieces and they ruin it too.And so it will carry on.

Remember the English taxpayer hands £45 million a day to Europe to destroy British jobs. Simple solution: stop handing this cash over to the wasters on the Continent and use this to invest in Cheshire instead, including Vauxhall.

O.K. so when you go to anywhere in Europe you see an Astra or other badged Vauxhall as we know it it has an Opel badge. Why is that? Why did GM close Luton rather than the German Opel plant? Luton was supposed to be more productive. Maybe it was because the Germans protected there workforce with massive payouts if the plant was closed which Vauxhall didnt for some reason. I worked for Vauxhall for 6 years, a great company. You were well looked after. All the local small eng. companys also went bust. Bye bye Ellesmere Port, glad I never moved there is the late 1960"s, you are beyond saving as they, GM, whom are in great financial crisis could not care less.

GM in the US are still making gas guzzling trucks with 500hp engines. Can't sell those anywhere else except China. No wonder the whole conglomerate is going broke.

The Indians will buy GM out in the UK and all for a pound.
    • Richard  •  3 months ago
Worked at Ellesmere Port for over 30 years. It is their jewel in the crown. If they close it,it will be because it is easy to do so.Unlike the German plants. It will be a political decision.
